I tend to do about 2-3 hours film and tv time a night. But that's not for a course or anything :D

When I was doing my uni degree I had 3x2hr lectures and 3x2hr tutorials a week = 12hours. That doesn't include reading, revision and coursework time.

It will be as interesting as she finds the subject. I'm guessing there will be a lot of other things involved than just watching and writing about TV/films.

I'm not doing that exact course but something similar. Timetables are completely different depending on the uni and then which year you are in - you tend to have more hours in first and second year - but with a course like this I never had more than about 16 hours a week I think, and that was first year. At the moment I have about 8 hours a week and 2/3 of those hours are for film screening.

She will probably find that with a course entirely on film and tv studies half her hours will be watching films.

    Which is great!

Can't really say how interesting it will be because obviously it depends on the person's interests! I'd say make sure she understands it wont be as simple as these media studies a levels etc, there is a lot of critical and in depth analysis that goes with film studies, a lot of theory from the likes of deleuze, bazin.. which can at time be really hard to comprehend.

I know two people who do Film Studies.

They have 4 lectures a WEEK.
    Thats under 4 hours.

I've been told that the hours haven't changed much in the 3 years, often being between 3 an 7.

Apparently the course is "extremely easy" and has been referred to as a "mickey mouse course, similar to Underwater Basket Weaving".

Whereas I do a Science based degree and have 35 hours a week lectures/tuition/labs/meetings. With coursework, research, exams, reading and such on top in my own time.

Josh, who does Film Studies full time only had 4 hours a week in his second year.

I do know people who have taken Film Studies as a free elective (one of 4 modules per semester), but again its only 1 or 2 lectures a week, so under 2 hours.

Really you want to call the University and get put through to the department that deals with the course and simply ask them to approximate a standard students in-uni lecture/seminar/lab time, discounting outside research/reading.

    But!
If a student feels they are not getting enough instruction for their tuition fee's they can complain and even take the Uni to court, as someone recently did :)

I wish I could say that! This year I've had between 30 - 35 hours of lectures a week for each module I've had. maybe I should have chosen film studies.......
