reclaiming tax on 2nd job

Options
I work full time and have a 2nd job working on a nurse bank, I'm now being taxed at 40% on my 2nd job, I'm assuming because my earnings are above the threshhold. Can I reclaim the difference in tax or do I have to grin and bear it?
Thanks DOCC109

I would assume you have been taxed at 40% becasue you are a 40% taxpayer. How much do you earn in each job?

  • Thanks for getting back to me. I earn more than £32000 in my first job and can earn £10000 in the 2nd job if I put enough hours in. Which I have done this year. I thought that you could reclaim the tax, am I wrong?

40% tax on your second job is not correct on the info you have given. Your income is:
    Main job 32,000
    2nd job 10,000
    Total 42,000
    less PA 6475
Taxable 35525 - which is within the 20% band of £37,400

You need to contact your tax office and tell them this so that they can adjust your code on your 2nd job to 20%. Any tax overpaid will be refudned through your pay.

  • do you have any other sources of income such as dividends or bank interest.

Also, do you have any kind of benefits from your employer such as a company car, free medical insurance, interest free loan, free or cheap accomodation etc.

All of this could push you into the higher rate.

I always thought you got taxed 40% on *any* second job, regardless of earnings?

normally a second lob will be taxed as BR..i.e. 20% plus NI if appropriate.
  • I had a closer look at what I earn, my 1st job is 32.400 pounds and I can eran between 10,000 and 20,000 in my 2nd, so far this year, I have earned 11,000. My tax code was BR and now D0, since July. I'm going to try and contact tax office tomorrow, if I get any info, I'll post it.

  • If you have earned £11,000 in the second job so far this year then it would look like you are easily on track for £20k over the full year. Thus you would go into the higher tax band at some point.
