Not sure I like the idea generally though - is there not a fear that it inculcates the idea of loans and credit into people too early?
I can see your point but I don't think so. It's only the savvy who even consider taking the loan just to save it; you're more likely to hear of students scared of taking student loans and wanting to avoid them at all cost (that's if they even know they have a loan as some 'helpful' parents apply for their kids). Your argument probably better applies to 0% student overdrafts.
As well as the profiteering there's the advantage of having a pool of the cheapest money a person will probably borrow in their lifetime. I think it's a sad fact that students have to resort to borrowing in the first place.0
