Files in folder disappear... re-appear... disappear...re-appear etc.

I have a folder on a slave HDD with a large number of files in it. In the last 6 months I've experienced temperamental behaviour when opening this folder.

For no apparent reason, over half of the files began not appearing when the folder opened. I'd restart the computer and try again and they still wouldn't appear. So I tried searching for a file that I knew was in there but wasn't showing, and this did the trick of making the computer 'see' the missing files.

Then maybe a few weeks later it happened again - the same files dispappeared. I tried doing another search for the same file I'd used before but this time it didn't work - they remained 'missing'. his would continue to be the case each time I booted the computer for afew days, and then for no good reason the files would suddenly be fully listed again.

This has now happened at least four times over the 6 months. At the beginning I was obviously concerned that the HDD was in trouble, and I still am, but the fact it eventually corrects itself (or at least - has done so far...) is just plain weird.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips. Google searching is surprisingly not giving me any obvious matches - I say surprising because given the size of HDDs nowadays and the number of digi photos, mp3s etc. people have, I would have thought this would have been seen by others.

You could try running smart defrag

Suggestion: Download Hirens boot cd 10, burn to cd, reboot from cd and run the hdd regenator program on that hard drive it will check and fix any errors on the hdd, without deleting/removing anything. , or you can use the other hdd tools, seagate, maxtor, fujitsu, etc make sure to select the right one for your hard drive make.
Plus its a good cd to have handy, and its freeware.
  • Replace the SATA/PATA drive cable.

Thanks for the input. Defragging could well help - I've never done it on this HDD. Defragging makes me nervous - both my HDDs are getting on a bit, and I'm sure the only time I've had an HDD fail on me was during a defrag.
    Replace the SATA/PATA drive cable.

Could you explain what that would do? I don't see any indication that the cable is faulty.
