At present I am a Scottish Power customer but my fixed deal has just ended.
By looking on the comparision websites it looks as if I can save up to £300 a year by switching to a non Economy 7 tariff.

I asked SP if I could go onto a non E7 tariff even though I have got an E7 meter. They say no I would have to pay for a meter swap.

I emailed EON and British Gas asking about their tariffs. EON rang me fairly quickly and said that there is no problem having a non E7 tariff with a E7 meter.

Now, I've just had a call from BG. They say no one can have a non E7 tariff using an E7 meter. It was something they used to do but all suppliers were told by the regulators not to do it.

Bit of clarification enyone? Especially the EON Rep on here please.

    Hi tfspark

You can definitely go on a single rate tariff even if you have an Economy 7 meter.

You do not need to have the meter changed. We just add the night and day usage together and charge it all on the day rate.

Hope this clarifies our policy but give me a shout if you need more info. Always happy to help. :)

I wish this sensible attitude prevailed across the board. If one company can do it, they all can. With my E7 meter, you would not even have to add the day and night rate together, as there is a third TOTAL screen, so not even any arithmetic required.

Thanks all for your speedy replies.

Keith, I was only going by what I had been told by energy supplier reps. They should know! Out of Scottish Power, British Gas, EDF and EON it appears to be only EON who can do this without a meter swap.

Malc, that certainly clarifies it and you may just have swung the deal. As I'm looking at an online deal I guess I have to sign up online? I also assume that it will give me a choice of the single rate as I progress through the sign up procedure?

Violetta, I have exactly the same meter. Third press on the button gives you the total. Not rocket science eh?

Exactly. Couldn't have put it better myself.

It must be true. BG said the Regulator said. So it can't be a porky, or if it is, it must be the first.

    Hi tfspark

That's right; you will have to register with our website to be eligible for an online tariff.

To go for the single rate leave the box asking about Economy 7 blank. This will then produce a quote for a single rate.

Should be straight forward but give me a shout if you need any more help. :)

  • I dont know why BG told you that. You can allways have both day and night readings added together. Sometimes they can exchange the meter for free, and would rather you chose this option (not sure why) but you can always just have the reads added together if you want.
