Cancelling BT line

I'm just moving into a student house with 3 housemates and we have decided to go with Virgin Media for Internet, TV and phone. So we need to cancel the BT line.
However, as we are just moving in, the BT line is currently not in any of our names.

Would we have to phone to change the line to one of our names before we cancel?
As it seems a bit silly to have to change the line to my name, just so I can then cancel it.

Thanks

Don't do anything. You'll commit to a 12 month contract if you change the line into your name.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • How do I go about cancelling the line then? As I'm assuming they won't let me cancel a line thats not in my name.

Why would you want to cancel it? It has nothing to do with you and lies there doing nothing - provided one of you doesn't plug a phone in and fraudulently make calls (techically abstracting electricity under the Theft Act 1968) of course.

You're going to have cable. Forget about it.

What about the bills that will be coming to the house for the BT line rental then?
Sorry if I sound dumb about this, its the first time I'll be paying my own bills.

Do you have a BT line? No. Will the bills be in your name? No. If you opened the bill addressed to someone else you would commit a criminal offence.

If a car was left in your parking space outside, would you tax and insure it?

As long as you don't make use of the line, it is not your responsibility (to cancel or pay for).

Not a criminal offence on the links which are normally provided to show that it is

    This advice is sound.
