Leaving personal debt behind

Against my advice my friend has decided to leave Hong Kong without paying off his credit card debt which is about GBP 6k. He has no intention of paying this back, but I was under the impression that his bank could track him back to the UK and make him pay. What are the ramifications of him doing this?
Any advice that I can pass onto him would be grately appreciated.

They won't be able to do anything, but he will struggle should he ever go back to HK. Different jurisdiction so they would not follow him to the UK, if they did then he simply tells them to !!!!!! off!

Sounds like he was right then......Not a criminal offence so presume he could return as long as he didn't notify the bank that he was back?!0

Well I would tell him not to return to Hong Kong for a very long time.
Some of the DCAs there are run by the triads, not nice people.
But Hong Kong falls under a different legal system to the UK, so once he is back in the UK there is not much they can do to chase him, unless he owes money to HSBC who have centres in both Hong Kong and London, who could then perhaps use their "right to offset" against any UK accounts that he may have with them.0 -

It would be a criminal offence in HK, but they cannot chase him over here for it. May cause problems if he did decide to go back though.
Not sure its worth it for £6k0 -
sounds like someone that does not live up to their responsabilitys, is he ilegally working here?0

Rather judgemental wouldn't you say? To me it makes good business sense, if you're leaving a country with no intention of return then why not? They aint going to go to the wall for a measly £6k are they
Regards to employment status; this doesn't matter and is not relevant to the thread whatsoever. What if he is working illegally? What if he isn't? Who cares? Thats my point.

Haha - wondered how long before someone would post that they are run by Triads...... Its usually the Middle East (UAE/Dubai) etc that will 'kill you' if you ever return, HK aren't quite as bad (are they? haha)......

That in one post sums up your attitude perfectly.
A complete lack of personal integrity and responsibility, which epitomises all that is wrong with society these days.
I hope one day someone owes you a few grand and ucks you over good and proper, you might change your tune.0
