Bank Charges & debt collection ageny

I have refused to pay the abbey 400 pound in bank charges.. They have closed my account & passed my details to a debt collection ageny who are threatening to take me to court over this.
I really need some advice as to what my best course of action is, i do not want my credit rating to be affected but i am really angry at having to pay back these charges.
If i pay the debt collection ageny will i still be able to claim for them off the abbey?
Please help

You don't make it clear whether:
a) you have already put in a claim to Abbey for a refund or
b) you are merely refusing to pay them.
if a) write to the DCA, saying the debt is is dispute and demand they return it to Abbey
if b) put in a claim to Abbey asap0
