engine replacement????

Hi,

we havean P reg audi A4 1.8t, this weekend we have had to have it recovered by AA.

Now at first the oil light came on, so we stopped at a garage and topped it up.

Then went out in it next day the light was still flashing, even though we knew there was enough oil in so thought it might be a fault on the light and whilst driving it it sounded really noisy like a diesel engine, then a pop pop noise and it died.

So the car has just left for ther garage, but the AA fella said it might be the oil pump, and if so that might be it for the engine, as it has been driven :(

If the garage say it needs a new engine, we will have to think what is the best thing to do cost wise.

Im thinking my options are
1) - see how much a second hand engine is, hopefuly the cost of putting the engine in would be covered by my AA warranty (parts/labour etc)

2) - if this cost is too much then somehow getting rid of my lovely Audi and getting a really old banger as we just dont have the money to get a half decent car, which i really dont want to do :(

Anyone know how much a second hand engine would be?
What are the options to get rid of Audi if the engine is terminal? (I know id get about £100) scrap for it, but we only got it 5 months ago, with 12 mot and tax an cost us £1300 and i wondering if any other option?.

In the mean time i wait for the garage to ring me to update me, but doesnt sound good:(

Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated

Find out what is actually wrong. Find out what the costs of the possible remedies are, from your garage. Find out what the AA warranty is prepared to pay for and then come back and ask us.

My gut feeling is that if it needs a new engine you will be throwing good money after bad. Always a chance you take buying a banger.

The 1.8 turbo engine is notorious for sludge and because of this second hand engines are rare (and risky if you do find one).

If it is sludge then probably the best advice is to stick it on Ebay with a starting price set at the scrap value

If the engine is gone and it needs spending anything from £1000+ on it in repairs in any given year (never mind one hit) it becomes more economical to have something younger and preferably under warranty.
A typical car of this size (Mondeo/Vectra) bought 1 year old depreciates £1500 - £1800 a year and has lower running costs by several hundred (say £400) a year. Doesn't make sense top spend £1100-£1400+ a year on this type of car just to keep it going at risk of more expense.
An Audi A4 1.8T looses about £2250 a year early in it's life so long as
you did not buy it brand new so you could use £1400 as your guide.
Scrapping it and getting another £1300 Audi A4 might be better and hoping for the best with that.

Don't spend money on old engine - it's not worth it. I have done this in past and regretted my decision. Just scrap the car and get another one.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
  • yup seen this several times with friends etc, another quality VAG product:rotfl:, people still fall for the marketing, its comedy
  • think the AA will only cover up to £500

Well the thing, the OP didn't stop when they had a chance! The oil light came on, the engine sounded strange, but they still kept going! It's nothing to do with it being a VAG car! You wouldn't drive any car with no oil in the engine. (Whether that be due to a malfunction pump, or really no oil.)

The VAG 1.8T engine suffered problems with oil pressure switch and/or oil pumps, which if left, ended up with a duff engine.

The other problem was the oil pipes went all the way around the engine and got gunged up.
