Anyone speak Romanian?

I know this is a totally random request and probably not the right section for it!
However, we have some friends getting married next year, to be hubby is from Romania.
We would like to buy them a gift and have their names, the date and a message engraved on it. Names and date in English, but we thought if there was a Romanian phrase 'good luck' or 'wishing you the best for the year's ahead' or something longer and more romantic! it might be nice.
Now, I know I'm opening myself up here for possible hijack! - please be sincere! I will try and get it sense checked twice.
Don't want to use an online translator as they sometimes don't translate well, and, as this wil be engraved want it to be perfect.
Huge thanks for any help.

Why don't you try and use a translator like this one

it might help if no one speaks the lingo :-)0 -
Hi Ella
thanks - as mentioned in my OP I don't like to use free online translators, they ususally can translate a word but sometimes struggle with a phrase - also I'm looking for a Romanian phrase if there is out out there.
Thanks tho....0 -
Maybe try and find a Romanian forum to ask on?

Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0

I don't, but google throws out some interesting things that might inspire. If you decide what you want and want to check the spellings etc it might be worth a translaotors fee? or a few words it wouldn't be so very much.

Cheers for the advice above. I'll try the yahoo question thing and see if that gets me anywhere.

You could always go to the library and see if they've got a Romanian - English dictionary/phrase book.,___,

Hi.. thanks to lostinrates!
I popped the question up on Yahoo questions and recevied this reply...
Usually when someone gets married, in Romania we say "Casă de piatră!", literally "Stone house", meaning a marriage hard and durable as a stone. You can also say "Felicitări!" which means "Congratulations!" or "Toate cele bune!" meaning "wishing you the best"
exactly what I was after! Now just need to find an engraver who can copy the text exactly!0 -
Hi there,
I have family from Romania and the tradition is the Casa de Piatra. When I got married all the Romanians got us a nice stone with their names on it. It is traditionally because Romanians tend to build their houses by hand themselves, so it is the first stone of your first house together. It's now moved onto the stone being a symbol of your strength of marriage.
So I would say go with that idea. It does need to be a stone of some descritption. How about some engraved slate?
Also, if you can get hold of it, get some tuica (pronnounced Sweeka). It's the traditional liquour of Romania. It's deadly, but at least he'll feel like he's at a Romanian wedding! It's basically a plum brandy/snaps.
If I can help anymore, just let me know.0 -
Brilliant!! Many thanks babystoat - great ideas to go with.
