I just wanted to get views on buying childrens DVD's as opposed to buying childrens Videos.
In recent weeks I bought several childrens DVD's costing quiet a bit and almost all have been damaged within one month of viewing,i.e. they completely stop playing, stop being recognised by DVD player or pause every few seconds when being played (very frustrating!).
They have been handled by my children but only to the point of putting into the DVD player or taking them out and putting back into the box. None are broke although have scratches on them.
We've have had videos that have been used over several years and although quality is'nt great compared to DVD's they play well.
I've heard of DVD's lasting years and apart from the childrens DVD's the movies we have on DVD we get the same problems, is it possible to recover these DVD's?? or are videos best???

we get the same problems here, they certainly don't seem as robust as video tapes. our lot are older and if they watch the dvd first chances are it will not be in a good state when we get round to watching it. if i was you i'd check out car boots & charity shops for cheap videos. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-09

if you go here you can get DVDs repaired http://www.scratch-busters.co.uk/toysrus/
a friend has used the service and really recommends it
i know someone else though who has bought a home kit for about £25 where you can do it yourself
maybe they need cleaning due to being handled by sticky kids handies? lol
i know when ours start playing up a good clean and they are fine again

Something to consider is to copy your (legally bought) DVDs, and use the copies for day to day use with the children. If they get damaged you can always use the original DVD to copy from again? The IVF worked;DS born 2006.0

Thanks for that!! (I do miss my 'thanks' button!)
I think I will stick to videos for now and the ones we currently have I'll see if they can be repaired.
Thanks again

The problem will be in the next few years, when you wont be able to buy videos anymore, im sure i read somewhere that some of the big electrical shops are stopping selling video players!!! If i had bought a dvd, that a month later had stopped working, i would prob take it back to the shop and complain!!!0

we get videos from charity shops. the only dvds we have had have all stopped working after being handled a few times by ds1 - he now has to ask me if he wants a dvd! thought it was just my clumsy child!Cleaning the house while children are growing is like shovelling snow when it's still snowing!0

Toothepaste is quite effective at restoring DVD's that are suffering from being used as frisbees etc. I used to work on a repair desk and whilst the video cassettes were more robust the video players were always in for it. I guess its the resemblence to a post box as the kids were obviously posting everything from cars to toasted sandwiches. DVD players seem not be quite as prone to this abuse so it is swings and roundabouts.
I think I saw advertised a thin film that you can put over the dvd to protect it from being scratched. This might be the best option but I haven't tried it.0 -
For younger children vidoes are great you can pick them up for 25p each from boot fairs. Then if they get broken you can just chuck them without feeling guilty.Barclaycard 3800

TRY ASKING SOMEONE WITH A GOOD PC TO MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR DVDs BEFORE THE KIDS GET HOLD OF THEM, AND PUT THE SHOP BOUGHT ONE AWAY UNDER LOCK AND KEY, AS A MASTER COPY.
NEXT TIME A DVD GETS WRECKED, IT WILL ONLY BE THE BACKUP COPY,AT A FRACTION OF THE COST OF YOUR ORIGINAL AND YOU CAN ALWAYS ASK THE FRIEND TO RUN OFF ANOTHER BACKUP COPY.0
