Electric lightbulbs

now we have the new onesI am finding that because I know they use less elec than the old types and because they are dim when first lit, that I am putting on more lights than before. At the moment I have 6 bulbs lit in my sitting room where as before it was 2 bulbs, 4 occasionally. Anyone else find this:confused:

I thought it was just me!!! I hate the new bulbs. Ive got one on top of landing - i put it on and I am up top of stairs before it reaches full brightness - and i am disabled with bad back and my left knee!!! I dont mind so much the ones in living room - cos i dont use them much! but in kitchen! I need full brightness straight away and to me the old bulbs much better! I dont want to wait before i check if chicken is doing ok. i dont like the light either - i mean i dont like the way colours are - i craft a lot and find that things i do with the new bulbs look totally different in daylight or old bulbs.............any other crafters find this? i find daylight bulbs too expensive - but then they being phased out to arent they? also I find the old bulbs more aesthetically pleasing - the new bulbs look awful - whats attractive about them? rant over - unless i think of more i dislike
  • I hate them too! I have laid in a stock of the old style light bulbs.
The light is awful and like tandraig I am disabled - and I do a lot of crafting, and yes daylight bulbs are being phased out too.
I have put Halogen bulbs in my kitchen. because they are a better light
I also hate the fact that they have mercury in them and if one breaks,
you have to leave the room for 15 mins:eek:How enviromently friendly is that!
I agree that they are ugly, but what really gets my goat is that I will have to replace a lot of my light fittings!

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. • get your self some brighter ones, you need above 18 watt (which is sold as 100 watt equivilent) you can also get bulbs with different colours of light eg daylight. there are some great websites selling bulbs or ask at a lighting speciallist (and then price up elsewhere)
  • I loathe the new bulbs; apart from the awful light they give off and the dangers in their disposal, they are just so ugly!
I have a load of reconditioned antique lamps and light fittings in my house which all take different bulbs - at the moment I can buy them without problems - but imagine in the future when I have to stick these *lovely* energy saving bulbs into an antique chandelier!
I'm stocking up on the oldies now!

I imagine the same comments were made when the chandelier was converted from candles to gas and then to electricity.

The equivalences are rubbish a 20 watt CFL is the minimum you need to replace a 100 watt incandescent lamp.

BTW It appears that you can get halogen versions of candle bulbs.

That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • I know, but the price!!!!
I can currently get candle bulbs for 35p each and feel we're being forced into buying the new ones.
I've always been as 'green' as I can and always buy antique/secondhand items where possible (hence my lovely lamps ;))

I read that the palace of Westminster was stocking up on incandescent bulbs........do as I say etc.

  • I just don't get how they can so easily justify them. They may save electricity but the production, and disposal of them must make up more carbon footprint than "normal" bulbs. It would be better to get people to perhaps swith to LED's? They give out good light, are cheap, easy to dispose of and don't take much electricity at all. And have an EXCELLENT shelf/use life!
  • I have found a cure for the fact that because of my poor eyesight, I cannot read unless it is in large print (Tuff on the envirofacists paper trail) and well lit, that now the greenofascists have banned the 100W bulb.

I now use the comfort of two 60W bulbs to get the same effect.
