Gain weight

Please help me. I want to gain weight because our family doctor said that at my age 20 I'm only 110lbs, I'm underweight. But I'm trying my best to eat anything to help me gain fast, or even take some vitamins but still it didn't work! Anybody?

  • not sure if it appropraite but you could try a bulking supplement.

can buy from places like monster suplements but I would speak to your doctor who could get you a referal to a nutritionist to help you eat properly and more fully.

I eat more calories than the average person due to bulking up ( I am a gym goer).

    I eat typically.

Slice of wholemeal bread with peanut butter and porridge (probably around 500 or so calories)
I drink a protein rich suppliement at 11am
I eat a chicken sandwich on wholemeal, carrot sticks, yoghurt and an apple for lunch.
    nuts mid afternoon.
Night meal can be chicken brown rice and ton of veg.

I would say make sure you are not avoiding full fat products if your bulking by this I mean full fat milk, plain nuts (not salted etc) and full fat yoghurt.

Dont be scared of full fat products such as the above as they are all good fats and are great for bulking up healthly...

Just dont stuff yourself with sweets etc or you will get a negitve effect.

ALso do not bulk to fast slow and steady to allow your body to adapt to the gain or you will get stretch marks etc... I would start with eating 500 cal more than typical avg person a day so if femal eat 2500 and 3000 for a male after a few weeks if that hasn't increased your weight then increase it slightly more.

Slow down on exercise as well if you are doing to much.
  • Thank you! Such a wonderful advice. One more question, does eating too much peanuts or peanut butter will cause me a negative effect? I eat peanut butter sandwich 3-4times a day, 2hrs after every meal is that bad?

  • Hi,

I'd eat little and often -snacking lots. You'll probably find your portion sizes are smaller than someone who is bigger and what seems a giant portion to you would be small to someone like me ( I've been a fatty for ages! :o). If you eat maybe 5 meals a day (rather than trying to eat 3 big meals) you can get more calories in.
I second the full fat dairy etc, don't try to fill up on sugars - you'll just feel rotten! Maybe more carby meals (potatoes, pasta, rice) will help.

    All the best!!

    Hi Charles

I'm another one trying to put the beef on!

Peanut butter is a good source of calories, i think it has quite a high salt content though, so maybe just one portion a day? I'm not a dietician though.

Did the doctor give you a target weekly weight gain, i'm not sure how much is healthy/realistic to put on a week.

I did read somewhere the other week, that slimfast tastes better than complan, and has the similar amounts of calories, i might give that a try as well as snacks/meals - just a bit worried about the looks i'll get when going through the check-out!:rotfl:

Like others have said, peanut butter is excellent for calories/good fats needed for weight gain, you can get salt free versions which would cut the risk of excess sodium.

Cooking with olive oil where possible is a good way to up your nutrition without bulking out meals

Greek yoghurt (or indeed, any full fat dairy) is also excellent, try dried fruit and nuts if you like them...
you can get protein bars, TREK bars are very nice but expensive, with a little googling you can make your own quite easily for portable and nutrient dense snacks.

    Be realistic,
if the amount of food is an issue, split meals up in to 5 a day with small, high energy snacks.

    Good luck

I would keep off the protein bars and trek they are generally heavy in sugar and it may increase your calorie intake but it dead calories with no benifit to your body.

If you want to consume a supplement go for the powder form that you mix with water these are generally better as you don't need a binder.

Meals I would go 6 a day with a pretty much even split on calorie intake that way your not hungry all the time and your blood sugar level should not spike...at least try to eat every couple of hours.

I would say your eating to much peanut butter with bread (the bread is a high carb especially if white) which will spike your blood sugar and make you feel bloated...plus your limiting your food intake meaning your body might not be taking in enough of the right vitamins.

I keep away from the dried fruit and go with fresh fruit such as apples, oranges and banana as they pack more vitamins and are not so concentrated in sugar.

People could probably help more if you post up what you eat in a typical day.

Example of weight gainer is http://www.myprotein.co.uk/mp-max/weight-gain/weight-gainer-(6lb)/ never tried it but as you can see it will lift your calorie intake by 411cals a serving if taken properly.

There is always to much of one type of food as your filling yourself with a limited type of food that does not have all the nutrients and vitimins that your body needs.

Plus you only need so much fat in a single day and peanut butter is high in fat...although it is good for you.

By the way best peanut butter to go for is wholeearth as it has no added sugar etc in it....There a tesco one as well but not looked into it much...keep away from the low fat one as they have a load of bad stuff in it.
  • i have tried for around 4 years now to try and get up to a size 10 or around 8 1/2 stone and am getting there slowly by eating properly (i eat 5 meals a day) and walk around 2 miles a day. am 8 stone 3 just now so hopefully by christmas ill have made it!
