I'm trying to adopt a "what would Mrs R do?" mantra as I go about the house :o

  • Hey! It's beyond fab if I've somehow inspired some of you to realise that housework doesn't have to be a major chore.....you can do as much as you want of course (and I do...), but just the suggested 2 hours make a world of difference to how your space looks - and therefore, I find, how you feel. And given that our houses, and what we've spent on them, is often what got us into this debt mess in the first place, I feel we should look after what we've got, now. Anyway, thus endeth the sermon.......

Got a big, big post bubbling under - not exciting, just voluminous - but no time just now. Busy busy Mrs R.

So catch you all later in the week - am hoping.

    Mrs R

And PS: thanks Beanie! Hadn't even realised that next month I will be sub 3k! Way to go!

Today I do not feel so chipper. I seem to have developed a nagging gynae prob and am worried - though I am a bit of a hypochondriac, it's true - but it's starting to get me down. I have the Drs booked for next week, and hope they will say it's just my age - which sounds ridiculous to me, as in my head, am 21, and don't even really and truly (on a good day) look my age anyway (or so they say). So hope it is my age, really, but expect they might say we should investigate a bit more. Ho hum, so a bit stressed out about that. Usual sorts of moans from Mr R too - he seems so unhappy sometimes, and yet I try so hard.....not sure what to do there.

Have sufficient work in the diary, but not really enough to make what I want to, in a month, so need to do some more promotion, but seem not to be getting the time.....but is prob early days, as DS3 only returned today, we've only been back home since the weekend, and the kitchen project (now complete, and lovely) was massively disruptive all round......so hope to make some headway soon.

Registered with a few companies for mystery shopping, just in case....might be a few more opportunities to earn there, perhaps. Listed some stuff on eBay today - just general clutter from the ex-kitchen. And probably fairly pressing is that I pick up the threads of some freelance work that's been left hanging over the summer, as it does offer opportunities to earn more than the HM'ing - though is spasmodic.

Mr R is going to clear my RBS card for me tomorrow - it kind of won't help, in that for the next couple of months, we'll reduce what I take from the joint a/c to supplement my own income, as I won't have so much to pay out - but it will be good that it will be gone. I'll then pay a month or two of the minimum payments on my Virgin card, then start paying it back at about £400 a month - which should see it cleared by May 2011.

Feel a bit worried about our financial future, TBH. Our mortgage deal runs out at the end of October, and whilst Mr R has a pension income of £1k per month (at 52!), we've kind of realised that we have no formal income to speak of to get another deal with. That again is kind of not true, as I have my HMing of course, but it's hardly established, and Mr R also has a property company (kind of), which he gets sporadic payments from, and has a majority share in a lot of assets, but again not as a formal income......so it will be tricky this time round. Which is unsettling. We have about £60k left on our mortage, maybe less actually as we've been overpaying over the summer, and it has 5 years to go.

We also have the balance of Mr R's redundancy payment left (now down to about £65k - we've spent some on the kitchen, he topped up his ISAs, we've paid the school fees for a couple of terms, etc), so whilst we could in theory clear the mortgage, until he gets a job/contract, we need to preserve the cash as long as we can. We also have about another £35k in the stock market, but that's just for the school fees. So it feels like it's ebbing away - but that's probably just me scare mongering, I know we are lucky in so many ways. Anyway, think Mr R is about to start looking for work - which will be so good, prolonged exposure to each other is not helping!

Do have other positive MSE type things to report:

We're trying to do a kind of grocery challenge to reduce our spending - we do spend a huge amount on food, and I'm really good at cooking from scratch and not wasting anything, so it should be do-able (though Mr R scuppers my best efforts at every turn - Gressingham duck breasts, anyone?)......

Bought and read "How I lived on £1 a day" (ironically enough, it cost me £1.99!) on holiday - lots of ideas in there, not all do-able for me, but inspiring nonetheless......

We had a fab and not too costly week away last week.....

Am also reading that book with the enormously long title about how to feed your family.....healthy, balanced...garlic crusher etc (from the library). And Jamie Oliver's Happy Days book (also from the library) - so it's going to be a foodie month.....

Took a £50 cut in the element of my income stream which comes from the joint a/c this month, so am trying to be uber uber frugal and am clocking up lots of NSDs......

Last month I made £1000 - this month will be less, hence the need for more marketing......

We have friends coming for dinner and am setting a budget of £3.50 per head - but already have a haunch of venison in the freezer, so am confident I can bring this in.....

And other stuff, am sure......like, have bought no new clothes and no real plans to do so....

So, a little crushed, I plough on......
