Quick reactivation of BT line question

Hello,
I am moving into a new flat, it has a physical BT line but it has not been active for 2 years or more, and the landlord cannot trace the old number. I want to get the tiscali homephone calls/line rental/broadband thing. Do I still need to reactivate the Line with BT or can Tiscali do that as I will be paying them line rental?
If I have to ring BT will they be asking me for money? reactivation charge/line rental?
The prospect of ringing them scares me!
Thanks,
GSF

Tiscali (Talk Talk) can do it. But whether they will or not ............Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

neighbour downstairs has a non-active bt line, he had to wait 2 weeks for engineer assisted.
Apparently its down to if a copper pair is available and not just the fact a line is in your flat. It may be the engineer only has to do stuff outside and nothing in his property.
It sucked because I recommended BT on the fact they would activate quickly (on the wrong assumption above). Phoning CS will enlighten you whether you will get a fast activation or not, as they do a test remotely.0 -
I read the small print on Tiscalis website, they charge a £90 fee for re-connection....
So I rang BT and they told me it would need reinstallation which my landlord did warn me they would try and do, but i couldnt persuade them its already there.....Then there is the BT free installation but I dont want line rental with them particulary...and they laughably told me id need bt vision to get that for free which I knew was a lie but just chuckled to myself as they tried to sell me a £42 a month package. I am now thinking just get mobile broadband.
Thanks for the replies anyhows guys

BT only offer standard free reconnection if the wiring between the exchange and the property is in situ ,the socket is undamaged and the line still has dialling tone. Where there's no dialling tone on the line, or if has been disconnected in the past, the standard connection charge will apply.
Even if you could get standard free reconnection you would still be subject to a 12 month contract, with a substantial cancellation fee.
Talk Talk will take over Tiscali,s Business in time. Talk Talk will connect you for £60 subject to a 24 month contract.
