iPod sync question

Hi everybody, anyone knows how to stop the iPod automatically synchronising with iTunes library when connected to the PC. I know that this can be achieved by changing the iPod preferences in iTunes to only update manually. The problem is that iPod preferences would only show after you connect the ipod by which time it is too late as the sync process starts immediately. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

Hold down Ctrl and Shift then connect the ipod
Itunes might take an extra few minutes to detect the Ipod
Be absolutely sure Itunes isn't sycning before letting go of the keys - give it an extra minute above the time it usually takes to start syncing.0 -
