Co-op not paying out charges I had more than 6 years ago from the date of my letter

Hi,
I need some help. I have a closed credit card account with Co-op on which I had charges between January 2002 and May 2004. I wrote to Co-op on 29 July 2009 to request a refund of these charges, using the template letter on the site and giving them a breakdown of all of these charges, but they have responded saying they will only pay out on those charges applied after 29 July 2003 (being six years from the date of my letter).
I know that you can only claim on charges going back six years, but my account was closed in 2004 when I paid it off, so surely the time limit would be six years prior to the closure date of my account and not the date of my complaint letter.
Can you advise me on this and if I am right is there any law or regulation that I can quote to support this in my response to the Co-op.
Thanks a million
