train tickets whilst on placement

Hi all, Im just going into my second year at uni and starting placement on the 21st sep. I am going to have to use the train till Feb and because i have not used a train for over 10 years does anyone know how i can save on prices?
Im 27 and been told my fare is about £5.00 day. My bus will be £3.40 a day. Im will stil save money using the bus and train rather than driving because my car parking will be £10 plus my fuel etc. I have heard of bus/train passes but someone must know how to save more than the usual pass you buy at the station!
PAD from July= £55.10
Aug= £120.57
Getting organised for christmas!!!!

    It depends on where you are travelling to and from as to what is the best fare you can get. As a student you can get a young person's railcard which will give you a 1/3 off all train travel. Many places do combined bus/train tickets, often called PlusBus tickets which you can get when you buy your train tickets.
    You also need to check whether it'd be cheaper for you to get a season ticket for the bus and/or train (you can't use a railcard for season tickets)

    You have to be under 26 to get that young persons railcard :(

    Well thats what it says on the frontpage.

    Not sure about maturer students? :confused: Seems a little unfair.

  • Think as a mature student you will need someone at your uni (tutor etc) to stamp the form. HTH

    Also, you will not get a discount on trains departing before 10am except during July and August. Also, there are sometimes restrictions on the cheapest fare from the destination station during the rush out peak so you may have to buy a slightly more expensive fair.

    You may be better getting a weekly or monthly season ticket.
