Egg DD after card loss

I reported my Egg Money card lost and received a replacement 2 weeks later.

I also received a letter informing me of a problem with my DD:
... we are unable to set up the DD for your Egg Card as either the account details are incorrect or is not suitable to pay DDs
Account number: R
Sort-code: 12-34-56
  • As we are unable to use the bank account details above you may want to check that account number and sort code are correct ...
  • Once you have done this we can set up a new DD
...

I never set up any new DD instructions. The sort code quoted in the letter belongs to the account set up for the lost card. Account number "R" obviously does not exist.

I phoned customer service and they told me that the DD was deactivated after card loss. They could not tell me for sure whether the DD is going to be operational on the due date (15th) and advised me to check my current account on that day and, should it not have been taken, phone a debit card payment in.

I'll be camping next week and unable to monitor my current account or phone.

It is probably too late to set up a new DD in time for the 15th.

The best solution I can think of is paying the card off by debit card. But I seem to remember that their DD ignores payments made in the last 7 days before the due date. If the old DD is still alive I'd end up paying twice.

Any better ideas?

  • Cancel the DD with your bank (via phone or online banking) now. Then make a debit card transaction now. That way, if Egg do take your money, they are entitled to refund it under the direct debit guarantee (I think). Sure someone else can help out on this one better than me...
