Because its their job to deliver your shopping to your home?

I still think if a delivery driver is good enough to carry the bags up several flights of stairs, then that is above and beyond 'delivering to the home'. I dunno about you, but my home starts at my front door .

I had no idea that Sainsbury's advertised from store to kitchen- now that is another matter, and if that is what they advertise, it is fair that that is what they provide.

The trouble is, if it's not to your front door and you need it to be ... if you've got enough to feed an army and it's up 2, 3, 4, more flights of stairs - and if you're the chatty sort, or shuffle ahead of him slowly, then it could take 20 minutes or more to make one delivery.

I'm a courier not supermarket food but for catalogue companies, parcels can be up to 17 kilos each. I deliver to many apartment blocks with and without lifts (give me lifts anyday), sometimes have to sit on the stairs and pull said weight parcel up.
The health and safety clause not passing the communal door has been in force for years for many companies, one of the rules certainly in my company is ensuring your vehicle and their contents is secure(being able to see your vehicle while delivering), especially in high risk areas, a good cop out for deliverers, for certain customers.

I deliver up flights of stairs and do more than expected of me from my company and happy to do so for people who need it, love those who come halfway down to meet me, would love Finch as a customer, I have a few nice Finchy people.

Unfortunately though there are many more who think they pay the charge and bought the slave, I've had many able bodied people who are more than happy for you to climb their stairs without even a thank you.

I said to a young man 4th floor apt, (I fall into Finch's over 50 old woman category) these stairs must keep you fit, not likely he said everythings delivered!

I bet if more companies implement the "come to collect from your communal door" we will see many 3rd and 4th floor apartments for sale.

I do agree if your not able bodied you should be able to have a service to your door whatever floor.
Hope your backs better soon Sonia.
  • Many, many years ago, before supermarkets took off, many local grocers had delivery boys who would deliver, as would the butcher and fishmonger. I collect old cook books and many a Victorian cook book warns to check the delivery ticket against the price charged. I am not sure when it changed.

I am not so bad, and I never ask to have my delivery further than my garden, but plenty of Sainsbury drivers will deliver it to my kitchen, down a flight of stairs. However if I needed the help I would certainly ask (nicely;)). And whatever would have happened twenty years ago, the fact remains that today we can go online and book a delivery and we can ask for it to our front door. And to some it is an absolute lifesaver!

OP I think it does depend an awful lot on the local store and the individual drivers. Perhaps it may be worth ringing around other supermarkets to check their local policy or ask neighbours for a recommendation.

I live in a house, and the Tesco man left it all in the crates outside for me to carry in. He even stood and watched me struggle with a 17kg bag of dog food and i'm pregnant lol. :(

I didn't make a point of saying anything though cos he seemed a bit err, weird.

Yes, and the front door to my home is up 3 flights of stairs. I live in a flat, the block does not have a front door, simply an open 'close'. I would be gutted if I was told my deliveries could only be made to there.

I have M.E. and if I manage to go out shopping I have to have my husband (if he's not at work) or , most commonly, by 67 year old mother, carry the shopping up stairs for me.

I am not entitled to a carer, DLA does not apply to activities such as shopping (only cooking, dressing nad feeding yourself), so delivieries are the answer for me.

I don't understand why it's seen as asking too much for something to be delivered to your door? It is the job, and the delivery drivers are paid for it. It should not be given to those unable to do the job.

Just as I wouldn't expect to see an unfit older woman working as a removal woman, i wouldn't expect her to be delivering heavy grocies or other items.

Whereas my Tesco delivery man asked me where I wanted my shopping and, when I said that I'd just got home from having a caesarean, he not only carried them through to my kitchen but even asked which bags I wanted left at floor level (for fridge & freezer) and which I wanted lifting onto the worktops. (I'm in a house too, thank goodness I'm not in a flat)

I stopped getting sainsbugs deliveries because there was only one driver who didn't moan about the steps up to the communal door to the flats!!! I'm counted as ground floor but the block is on a hill so the front of the building has lots of steps going up to it.

The only driver who didn't moan - the one female driver they had!

I just got sick of them whinging about how it should be put down as a longer delivery because of all the steps - not really my issue - that's theirs to report back surely?

Occasionally one would offer to put it inside my hallway, but mostly just left at my front door.

I haven't been advised of the change in their policy at all, but I guess since our communal door is the one that's up all the steps it wouldn't really apply?

  • I've found delivery drivers to be a pain in the backside recently.
Are they being given a handbook instructing them on how to me miserable and awkward or something :rotfl:
They are paid to deliver and if they moan about anything I find telling them that the reason they are standing at my door is because they are here to do a job and if people like me did'nt require their services they'd be on the dole.
I tend to find they are usually ok after a little word in thier ear.
    If not just report them.
