Is £30 per hour the going rate for plumbers??

My oh just got off the phone with a plumber recommended to us by our old builder. We've got a couple of odd jobs need doing. Replacement of tap in the kitchen sink, install plumbing for a dshwasher and fix our broken loo. He's quoted 30 an hour for this. I am not sure how long it will take, srely no mor than a day but that could be expensive if it takes 7 hrs!!

What do you mseers think? Many thanks!

  • 30 an hour is very good, I would be careful with him only quoting per hour. Maybe get him to come a price the job with a quote not an estimate.

My oh works in the building trade, plumbers usually 40 an hour

agree with the above. get a total quote for the jobs. 30 is good per hour but he might be the slowest plumber in the world!

Good afternoon: Get a written quote for the works including parts, never by the hour/day/week, from someone who has seen the job. No doubt someone will be along later to suggest you tackle the work yourself or find a handyman/person rather than paying for a qualified plumber;).

thats a very good rate. get the total hours too though. you dont want him to take all week to change the bath taps.
    Get some gorm.
  • Your local DIY store will/should be able to supply a Y piece, your washing machine will already be plumbed in. You simply remove the red and blue pipes for the washing machine and attached a Y piece to both the hot and cold water (red & blue for washing machine and dishwasher). The total should cost you no more than £5 & can be done in a matter of 5/10 minutes max.

Ebay has the Y piece listed for 99p

Replacing a tap is relatively straight foward and should take a novice about 20 minutes, if you dont feel comfortable with doing this, then get the plumber/handyman to do this for you along with the toilet

It's a cold fill washing machine, and so is the new dishwasher (I hope), what do I do about the water exiting the dishwasher, do you know?

You are putting a lot of faith in my DIY skills, Craig!! I failed design technology!!
