Resort transfers v Car Hire

Hola ! ......I've been practising....:p

I've booked a ten night holiday to Menorca in July - booked flights and hotel direct (first time and saved a fortune !) for four adults. Thanks for this website for encouraging me to go it alone !

Can someone recommend a reliable resort transfer company I can book online. We're staying in Cala N Bosch about an hour from Mahon airport I think.

I'm also toying with the idea of hiring a car instead of doing resort transfers, does anyone have any experience of driving in Menorca during high season ?(first two weeks of July). I've never driven abroad so a bit nervous about it ! And what sort of price for 11 days am I looking at ?

Thanks for any info !

If you hire a car, you might have to pay to park it, space might not be available to park it, any damage and you will lose the excess on the insurance, if you drink you can't drive it, especially after the night before.

Taxis or transfers might be easier. https://www.a-t-s.net https://www.resorthoppa.com

www.alpharooms.com will do a return taxi for £112
www.shuttledirect.com will do a shared shuttle for £82 rtn or taxi for £104 (all based on 4 sharing)

Normally you can get a taxi at airport marginally cheaper than these companies but you may have to Q

Been there, also in July, and also stayed at Cal'n'bosch - in my opinion the best place on the island to stay. We hired a car - there is just one main road that goes across the middle of the Island. Once you get out of the airport and onto this main road, it is fairly straightforward to get to Cal'n'bosch. (We were given directions by the holiday company though). I think it might be a little more than an hour's drive, although it was a couple of years ago now since we were there. We had our own villa, so no problem with regard to parking. I would definitely want to hire a car if I went again, to get about and see the Island in the day time. There are plenty of restaurants and evening entertainment going on around the harbour at Cal'n'bosch, so you don't need to go far in the evenings - it's all there - lovely atmosphere around the harbour with all the "open" restaurants.:j

Driving in Menorca is dead easy and it'll probably be cheaper to hire a car than pay transfers and then you always have the option of seeing more of the island without paying out for excursions etc.

    Hire a car I say
    I haven't got one!

Thanks for all the advice - I think I can cope with one straight road across the island so will do a bit of digging about for car hire prices, but if anyone has any cheap suggestions then bring 'em on !

So far I've tried carjet.com and they quoted £166 for the 11 days for a Renault Clio five door.

    Cheers

Menorca is a pretty good place to try your first experience of holiday driving as its a lot more laid back than other resorts. For car hire you could also try http://www.holidayautos.co.uk
One thing to check with foreign car hire now is the level of excess on the CDW insurance. With the cheaper companies this can be as high as £500. With holidayautos you can take out a CDW excess waiver for about £2 per day £10 per week ( £18 aprox for 11 days) this allows you to walk away from any damage without a charge and you don't have to worry about the hire company "finding" damage to the vehicle which you haven't caused.
