Hi all
I hope someone can help.
I have noticed that after flushing a toilet in my home I get what sounds like a 'stream train' sound. This only goes on until the cistern fills up then dies out.
Sorry for the vague description.Does anyone know why this would happen and its possible cure...
Thanks

Is this a new development?
Do you have a valve on your water inlet pipe that feeds the cistern? I had a similar issue but it was just that the valve was not fully open. It was only very very slightly off, but made a big difference to the noise.
Failing that, I haven't got a clue, lol....but I'm sure some experts will be along shortly.Herman - MP for all!0 -

Its actually a 1930's built house if it helps.
If anyone had any ideas it'll be appreciated..

If you have one of these inside your loo
http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=88427&ts=53880
and you want to try something out...well here's what I did
Turn off mains water, flush the loo (makes refitting easier), unscrew the threaded cover nearest the floating ball it's the bit coloured blue on the picture but it will most likely be white on yours but there's two screw covers one on the water inlet side the other on the side the ball is on, it's the ball one you want.
don't let the small plastic thing fall out, but just refit it if it does. inside is a black rubber thing take this out and turn it around so the inner face is now the outer face and vice versa. it is shaped to fit in one way round so you have to flip it inside out with your fingers, then refit it with the clean face on the inside refit the cover there is a locator on the plastic circle which has a slot into which it fits, screw tight cover, not over tight.
turn on water and listen. It worked for me.0 -
Ok sounds interesting.I could give that a go and see-Looks like a cheap fix.
Out of interest how does it work to cure the problem?:j0 -
Well if your sound is caused by the water seal not sealing properly..the water squirting past the seal make a noise. when you look at the seal the surface is old and decaying, the other side is going to be nice and smooth like new, because it doesn't get worked as hard. Turning it round brings the clean new face to the water inlet, the seal works better and no more noisy water comes past the seal. It's a ten minute job, any probs just put it back the way it was.
I also found the new seal stops the water much earlier at least 3 litres earlier, I haven't bothered to re adjust the arm so it fills up more because its flushing fine with the water it's getting.0 -
Just a thought, you dont live next to a train line do you? especially one that has steam engines?
do you reguly use the toilet at 14 minutes past the hour or somthing like that?
Just a thought0 -

And I had a thought recently, do you mean an Ivor the engine sound.......
perr chi koff
perr chi koff
perr chi koff
or do you mean loud hissing sound as the water comes through
pshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
In either event or especially the latter. You can buy "silent fill' valves for 10 quid, they are very small and fit all toilets (just about)
Here's one but there are other types.

Great, I'll try that later... my toilet is new last year though so not sure if my train noise is going to be that unless they didn't adjust it properly when they fitted it.
Mine is definitely pshhhhhhhhhhh though and the noise goes right through the house. :rolleyes:Torgwen.....................

Steam Train Water-loo?? sounds familiar.
I have a similar problem after a recent refitted loo, debris from the building work was caught in a valve it hadn't blocked the flow, just slowed it and made a noise. its super quick and almost silent now!
Good luck, its worth a tinker yourself before getting in an expensive pro!0
