Should I have been told...

Ive been renting a house for the last couple of months and recently found out that the house next door is a hostel.

Should I have been told before I took on the tennancy?

I wouldnt have minded so much if they didnt play music all day and smash bottles outside so I cant park my car due to the glass.

I have 4 months left on the tennancy but not sure I can hold out that long. Ive already had people try and walk into my house thinking it was the hostel.

Im a young girl living on my own and dont really want to try and complain as I dont know what would happen, plus they know which one is my car and im worried they will do something to it.

Thanks in advance.

Some things you have to find out for yourself. As you have discovered, it is not hard to find out. The trick is to find out before you take on the tenancy. That's a hard answer, but you will be better prepared next time.

Did you visit it before you signed?
Learn from it. Visit a couple of times before taking on a property. Friday nights are a great time to find out what a road is like.

Get the council to sweep the road. [Report it every time there is glass there, and report it perhaps to the local councillor. Hostels presumably need licencing]

Keep your door locked. You could report the noise nuisance but unless it is truly excessive you're doomed.

You could do a runner but they could chase you for the rent.
Discuss with landlord the chance of moving early.
  • Yeah I did visit before I signed but never saw any of these problems.

I guess I thought it was a legal requirement of the agents to let me know there was a Hostel next door.

I will just have to sit and wait the contract out.

    Thanks for the replys.
  • Have you found out who owns and runs the hostel?

There will most likely be a full time office somewhere you can make your complaints known to.

There is no legal requirement for anybody to tell you anything about the property you are going to rent, nor the area. Even if you asked and they answered you don't have a leg to stand on unless you got it in writing.
  • Thanks all for your replys. Im going to speak to the agent and see if we can come to some sort of arrangement.
