wondered if any of you brainy lot had any idea what this problem could be and whether its worth sending to microsoft.bought it from woolworths just over 18months ago.
son started up console and within a few seconds red lights came on( not sure how many) there was a bang/pop sound from console and now has no power at all . tried all wires, changed plug fuse, nothing works and now won't even power up .

If it's not powering up at all, then it seems like the power supply. If it is, then it's out of warranty and not covered by the extended Red Ring Of Death warranty.
As for how much MS will charge for repair, I wouldn't like to guess.Dave. :wave:0 -
many thanks, do you think its poss. to just buy a new power box0

If the noise came from the console itself, it may be that rather than the seperate PSU. Would one of your son's friends let them borrow their power supply so you could try it?Dave. :wave:0

would be an idea except they don't have one, what a bummer.
thanks for your ideas ,not decided what to do yo

Why don't you try taking it into your local Game/Gamestation and ask if they could try it for you. They're usually OK with that sort of thing. If you take the console and the power supply with you, at least you'll know for definite where the problem lies.Dave. :wave:0

The fact that it flashed up some red lights would suggest you can send it back to Microsoft with a legitimate claim for the infamous Red Ring of Doom (RROD) and get them to fix it under the extended warranty. Generally it was 3 red lights that signalled console/power supply failure, so I would get onto the Microsoft website and take a look here:
(I'm not allowed to post links so you'll have to guess the first bit!) support.microsoft.com/kb/907534
Then begin the return process which is dead easy - follow the steps and you'll be sent a UPS number, get a box, package your xbox up, arrange for collection and then wait until Microsoft return the console all fixed and lovely.0
