Am I better off going to a travel company or DIY it? I am guessing the former is more pricey but i wouldnt have the worry?

If it's just the flights you want, you are far better speaking to an expert at somewhere like STA, Round The World Flights, Trailfinders etc. RTW tickets are fixed priced, but you are likely to get a £25 booking fee applied if you just book the ticket.
What you do get for that money is teh chance to sit down with someone who knows all the tickets & alliances inside out, tells you what is simple, or costly, and ultimately could save you a lot of time and money.
However, a long long time ago I posted a rtw that was possible entirely on low cost airlines and takes in some amazing countries en-route. You could try that if you fancy a challenge!0 -

Ekk, no it was probably under an old name before I had an argument with Dear Leader and stormed off in a strop (try SamBee?).
It did involve going via Sharjah on Air Arabia and took in Pakistan and India, and via Fiji.
However I suspect it might be difficult to do the one way back from the US anymore since Zoom went tits up?0 -
I am on a round the world ticket at the moment, and would recommend figuring out a vague idea of what you want to do, for example if you really want to see New York, or the pyramids or whatever, and then spend a bit of time talking to the companies. RTW tickets are quite complicated and although I book most trips independently I think it is one area where travel agents are very useful because they know the tricks to getting good deals and routes, etc.
On my ticket, I got 10 flights for around 2000 pounds. The agent (STA travel incidentally) knew a special deal which involved a long haul AA flight, which I never would have figured out myself. It is definitely worth picking their brains at the very least, and you can sometimes play them off against each other to get the best deal (eg, flight centre have a price guarantee I think).0 -
first you need to sit down and decide where in the world you want to fly.
round the world is too vague, I can go round the world for about £800 but would only go to LA, new zealand and Hong kong and come back but it would still be around the world.
do you want to go to south america? a basic RTW ticket could involve the USA, Australia, New Zealnd and the far east or do you want to do more
let me know as I have done this a few times and will tell you the best way to go about itBlessed on 18th February 2014 at 0814 with little Sarah xxx0 -
Choose the countries you think you want to go to, then go to a travel agent and ask which airlines can accommodate your request (usually as long as you dont backtrack they are pretty straightforward) hell... BA do them!
If you dont get the joy you want from a travel agent - go to the BA offices.
I know that there are a good few airlines which do around the world tickets but the prices vary from airline to airline. Cathay do them. Thai.. Malaysian.. BA..
The last round the world trip we did was with BA as they gave us a deal on Business class seats. Also done them with Cathay and Singapore airlines as well as Malaysian. Steer clear of china airlines as their safety history is enough to put you off flying for life lol! (China airlines is a taiwan airline)0 -
