New Camcorder Advice (need to copy old Hi8 also)

I am sure this info has been either on this forum or grabbit recently but I can't find it so hope someone can give me a hand.

I am looking for a good value mini-DV Camcorder. Have seen a few but if anyone has any recommendations please say.

However the main point is I have read I could use the new camcorder as a stage to get my old Hi8 tapes onto DVD. Think I plug old Camcorder into new one, records Hi8 tape onto MiniDV, then firewire that to pc to write to DVD. Hopefully I am right on that so what I need to know is what feature/cables do I need to have on my new camcorder to do this. Is it just firewire in and a cable or some extra video capture facility in the new camcorder?

(I know Sony do digital camcorders that can take Hi8 tapes and achieve the same, but they seem a bit bulky and would rather have a newer smaller Camcorder and achive the same in a rather more long winded way)

I have tried capturing my Hi8 tapes direct to pc but quality was worse than original - think it was s-video setting not working on capture card but have got hacked off with that method and want to replace bulky HI8 camera anyway!

Many thanks to anyone that helps!

Just gonna give this one hoof back on to the front page to see if anyone in the know can reply this evening.

Otherwise I will prepare to be met with blank looks when asking staff in Dixons:D

"analogue in" is the feature you need to look for when checking out MiniDV camcorders; better yet, one that has "analogue through" - that will avoid having to dub one tape to the other, and simply means it puts the analogue input directly through to the Firewire output, where you can capture it to your PC, and from there produce your DVD.
