Help! How to save + move out?

  • Yeah I enjoy doing online surveys! Takes a while to receive any money though! Might have a look through all my junk and see what I can sell! I do have a car I could sell as it isn't currently on the road as it broke down in June. However I have been wanting to keep it just in case I'd like to use it as a deposit for a new car...but it doesn't look like I can afford that anytime soon!

Why dont you get the car repaired if you can. Then, you may have more employment options.

I pretty much echo the advice of bitterandtwisted. There's no easy way to get the things you desire in life, especially buying a house. The 'want it now' generation doesn't really understand the concept of working hard, saving, making sacrifices. You don't have to live with your parents for decades - just a few years might do, depending on your income and savings.

Im in a similar situation, i graduated a year ago and stayed at home while i went to uni! so really feel like its time to move out! but only working part time - due to disability im not saving enough (plus my mum wants to up the rent lol) so will be even longer before i can get out!
I think in my situation im best of saving more then renting as with my little income ill never be able to afford deposit to buy!
Im looking for a full time job - but dont know if i can manage it yet but still looking!

  • To be fair, I did work throughout sixth form and through my degree but I have not been able to save much as it all went on rent and living costs! So I do appreciate that I need to work hard as I have for the past 5 years! I just hate living at home quite alot and wanted to know how everyone else manages to save and whether shared ownership was a good idea or not - heard some positive and negative things about it and I feel too old to be living at home! lol

Good luck with the job hunt krazykel it is pretty tough at the mo!

I've managed to save £30k by living with parents between the ages of 25 and my current age (29). Before I moved in I was living in a shared house following my Uni days and getting hardly anywhere. Yes, its been frustrating at times, yes, my self-esteem has taken a knock MANY times, but I am now in a position where I can put down a 15% deposit on a flat. I am due to exchange contracts on the flat next week. In hindsight has it been worth it? Absolutely yes.
  • Woah that's a lot of money saved in 4 years! I feel it might take me longer to save that amount of money! Nice one though! Very true it would be worth it, just hope my parents will let me stay at home for that long! I hope I can keep it up as well as you! :)

Ive got 2K saved which is good for me, considering i only work 16 hrs a week! But i get DLA for my arthritis (Its up in Jan so need to apply again but not counting on getting it next yr incase they say no) plus WTC to up my income.
I have prob wasted a lot of money in the past, i didnt have to spend much thru uni as living at home, my uni loan bought my car, insurance, driving lessions, laptop etc but need to start saving now

Ive applied for a couple jobs - cant travel too far tho as it tires me out and it will be hard enough with a full time job anyway!

Im having a big clear out tho now sorting my life and room! lol got loads stuff to sell on ebay/ car boot! and also maybe going to look into working from home - freelance web design - i need more experience/portfolio so i can work on that while working my part time job!

  • Sounds good so far! Keep it up!
  • I'm assuming you are early twenties, the same age I bought my first place. The best advice I can give is don't get tied down at that age when you still don't know what you want from life. Keep saving, and by the time you have enough you will know what to do with it.
    Been away for a while.

In 2003 the bank would lend me and the missus 45k Max and I had a 5% deposit, which would easily buy a 2-3 bed terrace with new bathroom + Kitchen in the North West on a 4% fixed interested rate. My wage has not gone up dramatically since then but these days the bank will oddly lend me over 100k but I need a very large deposit that would take me years upon years to save up to get a rate under 6%. 100k now would buy me the same as 45k in 2003. It seems house ownership is now simply a business propping up the UK economy at the expense of you and your children.

    Good luck with the saving.
