convert films onto discs?

I have legally payed and downloaded a couple of films for the kids and would like to put them on discs now to get more space on my computer.
How do I put .avi or .mkv on to a DVD. I got converter and I have tried to convert it to mpeg but the only burner i have is nti and cd and dvd maker 7.

    then choose Free Video to DVD converter , think it aks if you want to burn it straight after the DVD is created , uses another parts of the same free suite.

    insert DVD and it will do it all for you

    Or get a dvd player that can play divx from around £40 ish then you dont have to convert them

    Since it is only a couple of films and its for the kids it's not worth the money to buy a new dvd player. But perhaps I'll consider in the future.

    We have a couple of DVD Philips players very good for viewing on large tv and will upscale too to 1080i/1080p depending on model
