Car insurance - uninsured driver promise

The difference with the proposed disc is:
* Insured drivers names will need to be printed on the front of the insurance disc to prove who is insured
I suspect the real reason this hasnt been rolled out in the UK is down to the cost causing the government to drag their heels.
I know of some efficient countries in europe who have adapted similar car insurance policies to the above that have been working for years.0 -
Don't think that is a good idea. Too easy to fake insurance discs and too easy to retain them after policy cancellation and they wouldn't work correctly where someone is using a 'driving other cars' extension or where driving is 'any driver with permission'. Would cost a lot to implement and would have negligible effect on uninsured driving compared to the MID and new measures introduced making it an offence to be the registered keeper of an uninsured vehicle which is not SORN'ed. In effect they would just be a different form of a certificate of insurance.0

The problems of WIDs include
In the UK we do not Insurer the car for any driver as they do in many countries including the countries you are refering to. This means just seeing a disc does not mean that vehicle is covered whilst that driver is driving it.
When you change Insurers or car etc etc you cannot drive the car until the WID comes through the post which is very inconvenient. If you say no problem we will set it up so you can download it from the Insurer it becomes redundant as it would then be very easy to fake for most people with a pc (It would be easy to fake even if they are sent through the post and have a hologram etc etc).
As Raskazz has pointed out there is no proof it is valid as they could have cancelled it etc.
If we overhauled our Insurance system and started Insuring the car for any driver which is very very unlikely then it is basically a non starter. They have looked into this at least once and found it was a non starter. Everyone in the industry including the police prefer the current system.
If you are hit by an uninsured driver there is normally recourse through the MIB0
