Up to £2k grant help for dependents of Civil Servants

If you are or have been a civil servant, the Civil Service Benevolent Fund can provide grants of up to £2k to students living in a lower-income household, and where one of their parents or legal guardians works, or has worked, within the civil service.

Unfortunately they don't offer it to mature students going to Uni, only dependents but it might be useful info to someone who has college/uni age kids and is/was a civil servant.

There's nothing on their website about this; are you sure they give this much funding to students who already receive the full funding package?

Edit: Here is the information; the crucial phrase is up to!

    "
The Fund operates a scheme, funded by the CSiS Charity Fund, which provides grants of up to £2,000 to students living in a lower-income household, and where one of their parents or legal guardians works, or has worked, within the civil service.
To qualify, the student must be embarking on a course at a Further, or Higher Education establishment, and satisfy certain income criteria.
The scheme has been running for a couple of years now, but Judith Smith, Director of Help and Advisory Services, says it’s time more people knew about it:
“We know how tight finances can be for students, and indeed for parents who may have to continue providing financial support to their child throughout their time at college or university,” she says.
“Our scheme is not intended to replace existing statutory support for students, but it can be used to help pay for essential equipment, books/course materials, or even accommodation.
“Naturally, we have to judge each application to make sure it fits the criterion of need. But we believe there are plenty of people who might qualify for our support, and we want them to get in contact with us.”
To speak – in confidence – to a member of the Help and Advisory team, call the Fund’s freephone on 0800 056 2424 (open every working day of the year)."

Sorry, I fired off the post yesterday and then didn't have a chance to come back online.

I have no idea if it is just for first year students or for students such as your daughter, in other years, but as the website mentions 'embarking on a course', then that suggests to me it would be first year students but as ONW in the above post has provided the details on the website, just ring and ask - you've nothing to lose!

Apparently since the article went on the intranet at work, they have been innundated with enquiries - surprise, surprise! As you were a CS then you would qualify to apply but as ONW says, and as I mentioned, it is 'up to £2k' Good luck!
