I've become tight too!!! Really struggle to spend money now, which I suppose is a good thing, but even when I really need things I um and ah about whether to spend the money to not! Crazy huh!!

Glad I'm not the only one!!! :rotfl: :rotfl:
  • Yup, I feel terribly guilty buying anything now. I never had a horrendous debt (£1702.19 was my worst cc balance - I keep the statement to remind me to reign it in), but I do constantly feel a need to be careful. Nevertheless, I think that one treat a month is okay if you've been behaving yourself and the gym membership sounds like a good treat providing you use it of course! Don't feel guilty about that if you're being careful everywhere else: just think how you are improving your health and wellbeing.

Now if I go shopping and happen to give in to my 'urge to splurge', I walk away with my purchases and then decide whether I should've bought them. I often take stuff back now. Whereas before I wouldn't have even considered it.

People probably thinks this sounds crazy, but I'm an impulse buyer and will ignore the sensible voice in my head when I'm in the shop. It's like something takes over when I'm holding that pair of shoes, or that DVD!

At least it's a step in the right direction of spending less though I do need to address my reasons for being like this.

However, I have become tight when it comes to going out to restaurants and pubs. I do see that as money down the drain now. Once you've swallowed it, you can't get a refund! Not a very sociable way to be, but it's helped pay off some of those credit cards!

Great idea to make sure you're not tied in, whoever suggested that.

Also, it is definitely worth haggling. I tried it and got nowhere but I didn't mind looking a bit silly; but other people I know have got free months/etc. The most important thing is what time of year you join - you're well clear of the New Years rush, so they should have offers on. If not it's worth pushing them to try and waive any joining fees.

And if you work for a fairly big local employer they might have a special discount at your gym. If you're lucky it could save you a few quid each month.

In the end the expense of gym might encourage you to go more often. Mine works out at about £8 a week, so I know I have to go at least twice a week before it's good value...

I wasn't always this bad, but I do feel really guilty spending money these days....If it's a big purchase I actually physically shake at the thought of it!

I think you are doing the right thing by joining if you are sure you will go and your friend will drag you there...she must be under strict orders to keep on moaning at you if you say "no I'm not going" unless you give a really valid reason! The novelty can wear off however if you have 2stone to lose, the first time you weigh yourself after doing lots of exercise and see a loss or when you put on your jeans and they don't feel so tight - that is the best boost you can get and you will want to carry on going.

Your health is paramount so go for it. And as you rightly said, if you are in the gym working that bod...you won't be in the High Street giving your credit card a work out...win win!

Let us know how it goes.

thanks all i am looking forward to being a gym bunny now!

my work does arrange for a discount. it is normally £70 a month! we get it for £50, no joining fee although i am tied in for a year. but i am going to have to go for a year to get into shape!!!

my friend will def drag me, i think i need to go 4 times a week to a) notice the benefit and b) make it financially worth while. but this is quite achievable i think (it may well near kill me the first week tho!)

im gonna be skinny for the xmas party!!!

i am so stingy now its crazy! my family and friends think i am so tight!!! and i love it! ha ha

it has taken me months and months to talk myself into the gym thing, if i am going to do anything big like this i have to explore every avenue and ask everyone what they think i should do!
I used to be implusive but impulsive is expensive!!!
