I feel guilty spending money

must be a side effect of these boards!

I have decided that with the good news of my pay rise yesterday I am going to use half of it to throw at my CC and the other half to join my gym at work. I feel so bad spending money on myself tho!

I keep trying to justify it to myself - and I have always wanted to join my gym (i have put on 2 stone in the past year or so) so know it would be worth it. I went at lunchtime the other day with a friend with a free pass and really enjoyed myself.

Does anyone else get this spending guilt?!

    Yes.

Havent found any way of getting over the guilt apart from not spending.

I quite like it, its about time I started to give a 5h1t
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Yes I know what you mean, I get the same way too sometimes.

Best way to look at it is that if it is something that is needed or you can justify then it is fine. If it is money wasted then no, if it is money invested then yeh. If you are going to go to the gym a lot and it will improve your health then it is well justified :)

Hope that makes my position on the subject as clear as mud :rotfl:

I dont think you should feel guilty.......you need to keep a balance with theses things.....you are using half of the money to throw at your debts so i think you deserve a treat:T

Just check you are not going to be locked into a 12 month contract with the gym, I would go on a pay as you go scheme for a few weeks (the novelty sometimes wears off!!)

    Enjoy:beer:

I feel very guilty if I spend any money, whether it is on something I need or just something I want

If you think you'll keep the gym up then definately do it. I joined mine in Jan on an 12-day pass someone bought me for xmas (The Cheek! ) and have been a fully paying member ever since and loving it...
Even thou it costs £35 a mth and i could put that towards CC, it keeps me out of mischief after work and saves my sanity cos i live with parentals!! Tis a worthwhile investment but only if u keep it up! :)

the other half to join my gym at work. I feel so bad spending money on myself tho!

It's your health you're spending on, and who can put a price on that? If you were blowing half of your payrise every month on shoes, manicures & other fripperies (I love that word!) then yes, feel guilty.
What you must do is GO REGULARLY. (I manage corporate fitness facilities, so trust me ;)) Just paying the membership fee does not make you lose weight & the more often you go, the better value for money it is.
    My tips:
Take your kit every day. Can you have a locker to leave stuff in overnight? If you've always got clean kit with you then there's no excuse not to go.
Get a training buddy. Your friend that you went with the other day is a good start. You can encourage each other when you don't feel like going.
Have a proper induction & programme devised for you. If my company run your gym then the initial health assessment & induction is excellent & you will really benefit. A programme gives you structure to your exercise so you don't "faff"
Befriend the instructors - ask them to call you/email you if they haven't seen you for a week/few days. They will motivate you to keep going if you start to stray from the path!
You're really lucky that your company provide you with facilties at work, so go for it. PM me if you want more help & advice (if you tell me who you work for I can tell you if we run the gym)

I feel guilty too, even when it's something I NEED (yeah yeah, im tight!!).

I have a gym membership too, and although I havent been for past 2 weeks, I do usually get my money's worth. Its a "social" thing for me and I figure if I wasnt there I would be spending the £46.35 and MORE each month to entertain myself in other ways (and probably be a lot unhealthier.....).

My gym is 2 minutes away so really handy, plus there's no contract, just a month on month basis which is good!!

It hurt this week forking out £229 for my greyhound pass and £400+ for my aussie tour, and means my savings are less than I have actually saved (if that makes sense!!), still, shopped around for best deal etc etc.

I have got the strangest lunch today in my effort to use up my storecupboard/freezer ingredients & not spend any money, hehe!!

brilliant - i def want to do it, the classes are really good
the pool is gorgeous and i have a buddy who will drag me kicking and screaming!!
i find it so hard to motivate myself after work as i dont get home til 7.30pm and if i went out to the gym then i wouldnt eat til late (and OH would moan!) so i suppose this is the best way to fit exercise into my life style.

the more that i am in the gym at lunch the less i am in Next, Marks and Spencers, the market, Boots and other shops where i have too much temptation!

I suppose i shouldnt be too hard on myself when it is something which i am sure i will use, and is good for me! and i have to pass it 4 times a day!!
    no excuses!

I just find it hard to differentiate between what is an impluse spend on things i dont need and what is sensible!
  • I've become tight too!!! Really struggle to spend money now, which I suppose is a good thing, but even when I really need things I um and ah about whether to spend the money to not! Crazy huh!!
