External HHD For More than One Machine...

Hi
I have a desktop and soon will have two laptops and I would like the best solution to an external HHD that I can back each of these up to.
I have a router, so if an external HHD had a network capability I could use this - but most seem to be USB and therefore:
a) Would pair with only one computer
b) Would require that computer to be 'on' for the HHD to be accessed
So, the question is, what is my best means of acheiving an External HHD which I can access at all times when it is on:
- Do I get a USB/cable converter and just plug it into the router?
- Would a USB hub work from the HDD?
- Any other options?
Thanks for your advice (in advance!)...

You need something like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000C756YQ
There're few companies that produce NAS devices including the big network players including Netgear, DLink and Linksys too.0 -
there are also some wireless NAS around.0
-
So 'NAS' is the key thing I'm looking for!
Thanks

Well, different companies called their network drives differently, some called theirs SAN, NAS and Network Drive. Use that three keywords if you're using google.0
