Avast Avira or Avg??

You can turn off both the boot screen and nagging in the registry. Very easy to do. Follow the links previously posted. I'd rather do this and have the number 1 AV than pick the number 2, 3 or 11th for a product which doesn't have this slight annoyance.

avast for me, unobtrusive (when set right), and main advantage over avira is that it has an e-mail scanner which avira doesn't - stops the nasties on the way in

Avira free doesn't have a dedicated email scanner but it does have heuristics which will stop the virus anyway.

but why not erase it before it gets that far ?? personal preference I know, but it's better on the kid's lappys for exactly that reason

...and I just prefer the overall look/feel/interface over avira....

I turned those off shortly after I had installed the program. Obviously Avira works best for you. Indeed it is the better option where my laptop is concerned, but Avast is better for my desktop.

Of the 3 mentioned by the op, Avast & Avira are the better of the 3, but you can get the full version of Avira c/w firewall and other bits and pieces for nothing, all you have to do is sign-up to one of the partner offers available. Personaly I would go for one of the free music download for a week type ones, just remember to cancel before you have to pay.

The free ones use the same signatures as the paid versions - the only differences being more options and other 'security' features such as firewall and parental control's, some being more useful than others.

Avast would be/is my personal free choice but granted it wont give you 100% protection. I recommend you use Avira if you tend to be a magnet for malicious files or get something like eset's NOD32 or Bitdefender/Kaspersky which is paid protection but well worth the money in some cases.
