I am hoing someone can advise me. My mum has a BT line nad has now migrated her retnal and usage to Talk Talk. She is being billed £11.25 rental a month and another £5.49 for unlimited UK land line calls at any time of day. This is a must have feature for her. Also she calls abroad a bit and is happy to pre-dial a bypass operator for that. Is this the best deal she can get or is there another better deal for her? One other thing, she has no need for broadband

Thanks

Feival

Your Mum doesn't have a BT line now. She has a Talk Talk line.

I'd say she'd be better off with BT line rental and on their Unlimited Anytime Plan. The cost is almost identical BUT she'd then be able to use 18185 for her international calls.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

you can still use 18185 on non-BT systems using an 0800 free access number (and even from a mobile via an 0208 number) but the 18185 call charges are a bit higher

If she is on a contract (12 months?) she could note for the future that £5.45 with 18185 would get her 108 UK calls at any time of the day for any length of time. BT or TalkTalk may win if she makes more than that per month.

First of all,I am on the same as your mum, (near enough).

Lets get a few things straight.

It is my opinion that she MUST be on a contract. She may not have signed anything but my money says she is and it is a verbal contract. Whenever we are targeted by these companies for upgrades they always make us an alternative scheme which sounds better than the one we have, if we change to it, that constitutes a change of contract.

As for the TT scheme. Once we move to them, it is a condition that we pay the line rental to them. So even though BT will have installed the line originally, by moving to TT, it now is covered by them. As an example, if the line breaks or goes down, it won't be BT that replaces it, it will be TT. TalkTalk may employ BT to repair it, but it will be the responsibility of TT to ensure it is working.

Ref the international calls. You/she must be aware that through TT and this scheme, she is able to phone free to about 28 countries. A list of the free countries is available from TT's home page. I think I am right in saying there is a 50 min time limit, but there is nothing wrong with replacing the receiver and dialling again. Oh yes, and you by-pass the operator.

As for UK calls, on the scheme she uses, she can talk free for 50 mins (I think it is) anytime of the day or night.

I recently had cause to ask a question on Talktalks forum because it looked as though we were going to move house to where they had virgin and i wondered if it was an option to switch to virgin. The unanimous answer was "NO", stay where you are for the best deal.

As for you saying she has no use for broadband, so what, TT throw that in for free now, so it's not as if she's paying out for something she isn't using.

These are all my opinions and as I understand it are basically right. If they need a bit of tweaking, then so be it. I'd say leave her where she is.

The BT anytime call package £4.95 a month (12 month rolling contract) includes calls to 0845/0870 24/7, where as the Talk Talk £5.49 a month does not. (it only includes them for evening and weekends). However it does include 24/7 intl calls to 36 countries,so if these cover the destinations she calls their is no need for her to use an alternative supplier.

Your earlier post said she has now (recently?) migrated her line rental and calls to TT. So she will be in an 12 month contract with them, TT Anytime package is a 12m contract.
