Vista failing to boot

My DD has a Lenovo N200 laptop running on Vista, for the last 3 weeks the laptop will power on with charger however the battery will not charge. Now when trying to boot up it will go as far as the flashing bar but will not fully boot. It goes through the cycle of trying to repair errors but nothing changes and is still does not boot up. I can only get on by entering safe mode. Can anyone give me any ideas as to what is going wrong and how I can fix this issue ?
I have tried resetting the bios but this does not help either.

  • Log in using safe mode.

start > all programs > accessories > system restore

pick a date before it stopped working.

    Post back if that works

...or, safe mode and do a chkdsk on your hdd, choosing the repair errors option :)

then full scans of av, malwarebytes, and post the logs here....

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

There is no date going back far enough, the last date I have is the end of August and I know the power charging was not working at this point.

Tried the chkdsk option yesterday in safe mode but it told me that it couldn't do it whilst in use and option was to schedule it to run on system restarting. When restarting the system it went to the opening Microsoft power bar but did not proceed any further. I then had to shut down the laptop and tried logging in safe mode however there was nothing to indicate that the chkdsk check was running. Would it have been running in the background without giving any indication it was doing so ?

not normally, it usually does it's thing before full boot. Maybe that's why it hung on booting up, it may have been chkdsk starting up to do it's thing...try looking at task manager if you think it may be running
