First time moving out

Hi all,

Hoping that you can help me.

I was living with my partner but we have since split up and i am living back with my parents in a 3 bedroom terraced house.

I'm a 22 year old single male currently claming Job seekers allowance, but am looking at going back onto employment and support allowance as i've got to start physio soon as i suffer with major back issues and will be having an MRI scan soon.

I miss the freedom of living away from home, and from the parents and the fact that me and my dad argue and nearly twice a week he tells me to get out so i want to move into my own place.

As i'm on benefits, i know that i can get help with housing and council tax.

Can someone shed some light onto what i'm entitled to, and how i'd go about moving out into a place that will take housing and council tax benefit?

The only outgoings i have is a mobile phone £20 a month. £25 to mum and dad for a loan they have which i owe some from. £20 a month in a fine and £62 a month for car insurance to get me to job interviews etc...

So around £130 a month outgoings.

Thanks for any advice :)

Andy

  • You're running a car on JSA? Lucky.

You need to start saving up for a deposit and a couple of months rent. Minimum. I'm not sure how you're going to be able to do that with JSA at £64 a week and £130 a month outgoings

But shouldn't i been entitled to housing benefit? As i can't keep arguing with my dad as im pretty sure he will kick me out.

Even if you get housing benefit you won't get council tax benefit unless you are in receipt of income support, and you won't get income support unless you have dependents. You will have to pay all your bills (energy, water, council tax, phone, internet, car) and eat on £50 a week. Trust me, it can't be done.

At 22 you are old enough to bite your tongue and walk away if your dad is winding you up, your parents are doing you a favour having you back home. If you are getting stressed or angry go for a walk or stick some headphones on and listen to some very loud music.

You don't need a car to get to job interviews - how many interviews a month do you attend? Walk, cycle, get a bus or train, get a taxi, pay your mum to give you a lift. All are cheaper than running a car. Bear in mind there is more than insurance - tax, MOT, petrol, repairs. You may not have to pay these every month, but if you have no prospect of work in the near future you will eventually be stuffed.

I thought you could get CTB if you got housing benefit? No mention of being on IS was made to me when i applied? I don't get IS does that mean i wont get CTB???

edit. If the OP is on JSA then that covers CTB surely?

It's eighteen months since I looked into it, but that's what I was advised by the benefits people. JSA is considered sufficient for living expenses, therefore I was not entitled to income support. If I'd been entitled to even one penny of income support I'd have got full council tax benefits. The advisor agreed that the system is not set up for single person households.

In my honest opinion you sound like you could do with growing up a little and not expecting everything to fall into your lap...

And as for arguing with your dad? It looks from your outgoings as though you're not giving anything to your parents for your keep so I'm not sure that you have a leg to stand on there. They have no obligation to feed and house you now that you're an adult.
