There does not seem to have a discount rate to dial number starting with 0844, am I right. Sky tariffs start at 10p for this number. Just interested to know what members do when they have to dial 0844. Thanks

The cost of calling 0844 numbers (from a BT landline) can be ½p, 1p, 2p, 3p, 4p or 5p per minute (well, fractionally less at the moment while the 2½% reduction in VAT is still in force) depending on the 5th, 6th or 7th digits (see the BT Specialised Numbers Price List) so override providers cannot offer cheap rates (cheaper than what?).
Ignoring mobile providers (who charge silly money), other providers charge more (Virgin Media charges a lot more - up to double).
BT is the cheapest way and, for those using a CPS calls provider but who still have their line rental with BT, the advice is use a 1280 prefix to hop back onto BT for 0844 calls. Unfortunately, a number of CPS calls providers now use WCLI so the 1280 prefix no longer works. Sky, AOL, Talk Talk and Orange are among them. Primus is not.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
The other thing you can do is try and find and alternative 01/02 number if possible at www.saynoto0870.com0

The reason no provider offers lower rates to call 0844 numbers is because it is not possible for them to do so unless they charge less than it costs them to connect such calls. There does not seem to have a discount rate to dial number starting with 0844, am I right.
