Which supermarket is cheapest?

Hi all

I am still not sure which supermarket is cheapest and I wandered what others thought. I have the options of tesco, waitrose and sainsbury's and tend to go to tescos, althought my friend does all her shopping online with Occado and swears its much cheaper, but Waitrose is always labelled as the expensive one!

I spent £64 is tescos this morning for a weekly shop for 2! I planned meals for the week and took a list and stuck to it and brought only tescos things, but the cupboards were pretty bare, out budget is £50 per week, so I only have £35 next week : )

I want to make sure I am shopping in the right place! Waitrose don't do rewards though, but does this make a difference really?

:j

Any advice welcome!

Ocado online is cheaper than Waitrose the store even though they sell Waitrose branded products. So if you are planning on shopping in a Waitrose store rather than through Ocado online they will be more expensive.

  • It depends, at the moment myself and my partner shops at Waitrose, where we spend around £20 - £40 a week there, Asda may be cheaper however the quality of the food is inferior in our opinion!

Asda/Tesco are great for branded items and offers, own label products not so good and because we have found that many of their own meats other food items go off very quickly and thus has to be thrown away - ergo Waitrose is far cheaper!

  • I find Aldi and Lidl very cheap for things like fruit and veg. I also like their pasta, pesto, tinned tomatoes and toiletries and I think the quality is better than Tesco or Asda own brands, but the price is comparable.

I can't get all my shopping at either of those though so I tend to alternate. I actually find that Sainsburys can be very good for offers: I always get their 1% milk which is £1 for 4 pints, they often have good offers on cheese and butter.

Morrisons best for fruit and Veg, tesco good for Meats but not that good quality imo.
Asda I only like their Bread and Pizzas.

Tesco as a good all rounder I think but Morrissons close behind them.

Think it depends what your shopping for.

I use Tescos for fruit and veg which make up the bulk of my shop each week. There may be cheaper versions of things in Aldi, Morrisons and etc, but I find Tesco F&V stay fresh for that bit longer- apples don't go all fuzzy in texture, freshly cut fruit does last more then 24 hours (without going fizzy/off). I don't know how other items compare as I don't tend to buy them. Pound shops for cupboard stuff works well, and for cleaning products, I look for deals, store vouchers and buy in mini-bulk!

M&S are the Queens of fresh food with stuff always tasting fantastic- I don't know what they do to get things so great! But SO expensive. Waitrose is a joke, so often I have bought fruit and veg whci is poor in quality. Lovely service, nice place to shop as staff are friendly. But the quality of the fresh fruit and veg is laughable. Sainsburys is usualy good, but I find that you pay alot more. Sometimes you get really good stuff by fluke- bought some gala apples wednesday which were pretty perfect. But at the same time I bought some Jazz apples which tasted like they had been on the shelf for weeks. Hit and miss, and for that reason, not worth paying that bit extra for. At least with Tescos, you know what your getting.
  • I must admit i do favour Sainsburys over any of the other supermarkets. I used to shop at Tescos, but i have found that over the last year or so they have become very pricey. I only go in there if they have a good offer on meat,ie this week i got 2 lovely whole shoulders of lamb for under a tenner. I do like Sainsburys basic range and their fruit and veg is always nice.
  • I vote for Sainsbury's too. Their basic range is vast and much better quality than Tesco or Aldi or Lidl. I bought some baked beans from Aldi and they have more sugar and salt in them than Sainsbury's basics range.
Aldi and Lidl only seem to be any good if you want to buy something in a tin or something processed. The Super 6 are OK but I've bought fruit from there before and half of it was manky :(
I enter my shopping into mysupermarket.com and Sainsbury's are always the cheapest but then I don't buy branded goods at all.

  • Like the previous 2 posters, Sainsburys for us, no question. Their basics range is so good it would be mad to buy the brand name or even the own brand in most cases (there are a couple of cases where this doesn't apply, of course).

And, again in most cases, the basics range is lower in fat/salt/sugar than the brand names/own brands. We as a family are total converts to Sainsburys basic.

  • I would also vote for sainsbury's. Since I started shopping there I've been buying the basics range much more often as it tastes so good - more often better than tesco value. They also have a better ethical viewpoint - all their fish is ethically caught including the basics, all the bananas are fair trade and they don't sell eggs from caged hens.
I would also say that you should use mysupermarket.com with caution. Once you've put your shopping in for, let's say Tesco often every other supermarket comes up dearer. Check what substitutions MSM.com have made. Often a value item which other supermarkets don't stock will be substituted for the brandname or even finest version. You will also have, more than likely, picked up a bogof or two which you wouldn't have in the other supermarkets, and then again the other supermarkets have their own bogofs you might have chosen instead of a single product from Tesco.

Personally, I do my main shop in sainsburys and use the others for their big offers that I would normally buy, and Aldi for their fruit and veg.

    It's only a game
