has anyone got any recommendations, I am looking for a 3/4 star accom somewhere quite central withing walking distance of the musuems and restuarants.

also any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated

    Hi,

Are you planning on spending the entire week in Oslo? It seems to be a long time, and Norway is an amazing country to see outside of Oslo. Perhaps the train to Bergen (search google for Norway in a Nutshell) and a few days over that side.

As for accommodation, check out the Thon Hotel range, they have lots of ranges - Budget, City etc and have good sales on occassionally.

    Hope this helps :)

    Thanks,

I am still in the early stages of finding out things to do and was just getting a heads up as people are telling me that scandanavia can be expensive.

I want to do train journeys but dont want to rush as i want to enjoy places as well as visiting them.

I will check the hotel and also check the train to Bergen as that sounds good.

A good deal for 2p....I hope you know the airport is about 1.5 hrs from the city of Oslo and hasn't got very good connections it seems from most reviews.I hope you will have a good time anyway.

If you are using Ryannair then the airport it uses - Torp - is not in Oslo. It is about a 2 hour coach ride away or just under 2 hours by train.
For hotels try Scandic or as previously mentioned, Thon.
The Radisson SAS in Nydalen - is also very good. It is not in the centre, but the hotel is located about 2 minutes walk from the train station and the journey will take less than 10 minutes.

I did see that, but it should be fine as the latest train leaves at about 23.30 or the next morning about 05.00 hrs.

its all part of the experience

    Have a look at www.hotelscombined.com

Lots to choose from. We are going in Nov and are thinking of staying at a Best Western for £74 a night.

    Enjoy your trip

I'll let you know what the airport transfer is like when I get back. I figure that the airport this side is so convenient that a coupld of hours on a bus the other side is no big deal. The bus looks easier than the bus to the station and then the train, and slightly quicker when you consider the changing times, so far as I can see.

I'm going for £1 this Saturday back on Tuesday. I'm not going for long as concerned about the cost, but am looking to do the Norway in a Nutshell. I figured that the end of September was about the last date for this in a day, though, as by November it'll be more like a couple of hours daylight, getting the reverse of the midnight sun.

If I was you I'd be looking at going North, preferably to the middle of nowhere, and looking for the Northern Lights. There is apparently a very nice University city further north.

Thon seem a very good chain. I found them easy to book with, cheap compared to other places I looked at - the cost is about £85 a night for a double, and doesn't include breakfast - , central and very easy to communicate with - we've been emailling about me arriving late. Their English is perfect. (I have been told English will be spoken everywhere.)

The downside would seem to be the cost of drink, the difficulty in getting drink on weekends - stock up at the duty free, I think - and the cost of food, although fish is more reasonable than meat, apparently. One guide book warned that everyone feels hungry visiting Norway, due to the cost...

The upside is people who aren't remotely interested in my travels to Italy and France are interested in Norway, noone who has been has told me anything bad about it - apart from the cost!! - and I'm really excited!!!
  • I live in Norway (Stavanger) ;)
Have a look at Norwegian airlines...https://www.norwegian.no if you want to go up north (sites in Norsk BUT just go up to the top right corner and swap to english and the train system for longer trips outside of Oslo etc...is located here https://www.nsb.no again..jsut swap to english at the top of the page. Remember though when you are flying with Ryan Air you are actually flying into Sandefjord, Torp Airport NOT Oslo...you can however take another airlines from there to other parts of Norway .

As far as places to stay....
    https://www.hotel-board.com
    hotelscombined.com (as mentioned)
    https://www.smoothhound.co.uk/norway
http://citybox.no/?language=en (if you go to Bergen..I recommend this place. Basic but nice and clean.)

As far as eating and drinking...try to avoid buying a pint with dinner..RIP OFF! If you want some buy..plenty of the shops have cooled beer so that is the cheaper option. If you want a yummy sandwich or meal try out some of the cafe's as they have some decent food sometimes cheaper then a regular restaurant. You can also buy hot ready made foods in alot of the supartmarkets.

    Other useful link...
    https://www.norway.com

So have a look around and hopefully you'll enjoy your stay here but it's expensive so make sure ya bring some money lol.

I had a brilliant time. The weather was warmer than expected, so I'd overpacked on the jumpers. Bergen was wetter than I had expected. I wish I'd packed an umberella, but found a slightly damaged one that had been discarded so it was ok.

The bus to Oslo from Torp was very good. It was under two hours and the announcements were in norwegian and then English. It was 600kr for the two of us return. Going back the lady in the bus station explained the buses ran 3 or 4 hours before every flight and that they altered times depending on the flight. That said, I would get back to check the screens early as ours ran 4 and a half hours before the flight - there may have been a later one, but worth thinking about as a taxi there would have ruined the cheap flight!!!

We bought duty free at Birmingham Airport and put it in our hand luggage - they did check the sizes carefully, for us and other people, one who had to unpack and start dressing.

The Thon hotels were both fine. A bit Travelodge-y but a bit nicer - not as much nicer as you expect for £85 though. The one in bergen was nicer than the one in Oslo, which is having renovation works done - they did warn me about that. The Budget one in oslo - Astoria? - was very central, though.
The Thon Hotel in bergen had a luggage room and also used the bus station locker for £4 for 24 hours.

I was very glad to have packed some cheese and snacks - went for nuts and cheese slices and cheese biscuits and cheddars and pringles - on top of this we bought coffees in shops to take away, cold beers in Remi were cheap compared to the bars - £6 for a half litre, but this is in the centre. I had a coffee in a bar and that was more reasonable - i.e. not twice what you would expect in London.

Drinking outside won't be an option in November, though, I'm guessing. We put duty free rum in a coke bottle and topped up between bars, in parks etc.

We spent £300 on top of flights, aiport parking, hotels and the train to Bergen and back. (That was more like £500 - so a total of £800).

I loved it and want to go back either for the Northern Lights or the Midnight sun, in both cases, I'd like to head up to Tromso. Despite my love of Ryainair, I might look at flights there direct, due to the distance from Torp. Roughly speaking, I think it would be a seven hour possibly overnight trainride to Trondheim and then the same to Bodo and from there a day on a bus...

Another option though might be to do the Norway in Nutshell over two or even three days depending on the hours of light and stay at one of the stops? I liked the sleeper train, but another option would be to fly Bergen to Torp for the return home. (Think you need Whizzair website.)
