First birthday present ideas

Hi

My husband's cousin's little boy is one soon and I'm trying to think of birthday ideas. Would be grateful if anyone could help!

I would quite like to get him something to 'keep' as he wasn't christened so didn't get all the usual christening sets etc (although not such a bad thing I suppose, a lot are quite twee!)

I saw a really nice Emma Bridgewater kids set and wondered if something like that sounds good? Or a bit rubbish?!

Thanks

too many comps..not enough time!

the sets are lovely - i would go for a melamine set, rather than china, as they dont break so easily

  • I've absolutely no idea what an Emma Bridgewater kid's set might be: you can tell I'm not a parent, can't you?

In your position, I'd consider opening up a Post Office savings account in the child's name with £20 in it. Then, the parents and other family members and friends can add to it if they'd like rather than buying presents a one year-old probably doesn't need.

Good idea about the savings acc, I think he has one though, so we could give money (but would quite like to get a gift)

How about a Royal Mint coin set for the year he was born (they do special ones for births).

Or I bought my dd a my first Steiff teddy bear.

If you'd like to get a gift as well you could always get a stock of sturdy cardboard boxes as that's what one year-olds generally prefer to play with. (jk)
  • I used to love getting my friends babies a lovely piggy bank for a first birthday. John Lewis used to do some lovely china animal shaped ones - I got some for my kiddies and they still use them and like them to this day (the oldest is now 9). Looks like they still do some nice ones:

You can get so many shapes and sizes there is sure to be something that will suit him.

Two of my favourite gifts that my kids were given were a my first Steiff bear and a Royal Mint coin set, so I agree with Money maker :D

One of mine got 6 moneyboxes, the other got none!

The melamine set looks good too :)

Stuff you can keep, hand on but also play with! Might get a bit loved but can't get broken

I like toy's that can be played with, added too and will last, something like Brio or Duplo etc. We still have all of our brio and duplo from when we were children and when we go to my parents my DD and nephews play with it.

When we were younger we all had a bunnykins mug bought when we were born, and my mum still has these too. So maybe something like that. I can remember when we were bigger we were allowed to use them, and we were really careful with them as we knew they were special.

Or you could buy a tree or plant for the garden that can grow as he does, maybe a fruit tree so when he is bigger he can eat the produce? They can be really pricey though.
