Can i claim back my bank charges if i close my account?

I have taken out a loan in order to cover the overdraft i have with NatWest, as i was fed up with the constant stupid charges and want rid.

Would i be ok to close the account and then start trying to reclaim my charges from them?

I'm worried that unless i close my account they will charge me for something or other.. HELP!!

  • the terms of the loan would require the natwest account as the servicing account, so no they won't allow the account to be closed until the loan is repaid.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

  • No no no, i took the loan out with another bank. I Wouldn't give natwest a penny more of my business by taking a loan with them!
  • Anyone?? I'm off to see them in about an hour!

Yes that would be fine to close the account as long as you have not given the loan co DD details for that bank for repayments.
You can still claim charges on a closed account

Close the account but do not deal with the bank charges case in person as there is no paper trail. As an aside, they will close the account next week as they cannot do that today as the systems they require to give a closure figure are not available at weekends.

  • Yes i was told that when i called in, useless as i work monday to saturday afternoon. I wanted to see them in person to make sure they actually close the damn thing properly, i don't trust them at all with handling my account after the total !!!! up they've made of things so far!
I have already sent a letter requesting a list of charges, and am well aware that i will need to persue them in writing.
Cheers, i will get it closed down today if i can negotiate leaving work early! :)
