if this house is a HMO - each person having their own room, then a LL has legal accesss for repairs and inspection of the "communal areas" without permission from the tenants

but as i said before, just say no

if she does want to sell - she must wait till teh tenants have left before beginning disruptive works.... you pay the rent - you are entitled to quiet enjoyment

Age and the need for flexibility (disabled child) is a issue. Also, tbh, money ... I am shortly going to be the main income earner for our family (due to medical issues with OH). I could abandon an increasingly-frustrating-source-of-income ... but if your OH was going from £40K odd to maybe £25K at best, they were the main income earner, and it was just cos they were miserable, how would YOU react? Yeah, exactly. I'm not in a position to be prissy.

It takes a couple of hours to fit a carpet, plus the same to move furniture out and back. As you obviously have plenty of time for sports it's hard to argue that these few hours are going to affect your studies!

Obviously one who hasn't never lived a stressful academic life, lived in a house shared and used an sport to get away from it all.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

    ""8 weeks holiday a year " ??????? - and

""Sadly students don't get a break at half term""

you dont know the half of life yet matey .......

    Matey? Charming.

My point was that PhD students don't get anything like the holidays undergrads get. And even the holiday they're entitled to they usually don't get to use.

Oh and I'm not a student anymore, I finished my PhD last year and now have an academic job so I can assure you I do know "the half of life yet".

To the OP, I would just try to explain your situation and be firm about saying no.

To the people saying "get another job" etc, I don't think you quite get how painful yet fulfilling academia is. I don't take breaks. Seriously. I work evenings and most weekends, I sleep, eat and breathe my research, but I absolutely love what I do and I can't imagine it any other way. That's worth a lot.

Oh and PhD students don't study, they're carrying out brand new research.

There are deadlines for preparation before Christmas. And I work most weekends during term-time and exam-marking time as deadlines are ridiculous. If we don't research, we don't get promoted, so that doesn't help. Most academics at my institution take 2-3 weeks off a year plus SOME bank holidays. But we can't store up untaken leave either. We're not living in some cloud cuckoo ivory tower. It's a stressful, rushed and unhealthy job.

.- sounds like the average sort of conditions for most jobs... (sadly) - that's the way it is. Sorry but the deal with working for someone else is - they pay you money for you to do something you would prefer otherwise not to do. Very few, lucky, people get to work at something they'd do for nothing.

Re. working weekends etc. may I humbly suggest some time-management education?? If someone can't manage their time effectively there are alternatives....

If you don't like it give up working or find another job (same options as for everyone else...).

Hope it works out, wishing you (& all other readers) well & best wishes..

    Cheers!

Someone who lived in house shares until well into her thirties and has been in HE for 9 years of her adult life! You're right about the sport though, 1 out of 3 ain't bad!
