vista documents link in "open file"

Not sure if it ever existed but when I do "open file", the side links include "Desktop", "Recent Places" and "Computer".

Each time I want to open a file I keep having to go through Computer->Users etc. to get to open the file (unless the location is remembered).

Is there any way to put a link to Documents folder in the open file dialog?

Why don't you just put the document name or part of it in the search box? Alternatively click documents?

Because I dont want be typing things which I should not need to do - xp had the link and cant remember if vista had it and/or I removed it somehow.

Each time a program forgets the last location - the default view can be windows system folder, I dont want to be going back and forth through Computer->c drive -> users
- and thats the issue.

You mean a shortcut, find you file right click on it create shortcut and drag it to the desktop.

Yes a shortcut but not on Desktop - I want it in the dialog window for "open file" in any application.

The open file menu in Firefox includes documents I guess its application dependent.
I think the idea now is to go straight to the file which will open the relevant application.
Maybe windows7 will handle things differently.

Probably some setting or folder somewhere you have to stick the short cut - the whole menu is common to all applications. I have put up with it but its become tedious.

Dont fancy even looking at win7 (trial version hated that with the classic start menu no where and all those stupid glossy window dressing).

under c:\users\[username]\links <= just stick any shortcut in this folder and they will appear in the favorites section of the open dialogue.


The classic startmenu is over rated it takes forever to find anything if you have more then a few programs, the vista searchable start menu is far quicker.

Try this:

Office 2007 – Pin important documents to Recent documents list:

* Click the Office Button in the upper-left corner of your Office program (Excel, Word, or PowerPoint)
* Find the Recent Documents list displayed on the right side of the menu
* Locate the document that you want to pin. If it is not there, click Open and browse to the document so it will be added to the Recent Documents list
* Select the corresponding Pin (to the right of the document’s name) so that it turns green

Gers, thanks but I think I am not being clear with this.

Interestingly I did try your to do what you suggest - I am not just talking about one document here (I am literally talking about a link to the Documents folder for the current user).

Oddly I noticed just when I opened Excel 2007, if I do Open File I get the dialog and the Favourite Links column contains a link to Documents.

But if I try the same thing in Firefox or other applications (at least ones I have tried recently) - the Favourite Links is not showing the Documents shortcut (even though it exists in the Links folder on the C drive and as I say Excel is picking it up).

Still not exactly sure what it is you are trying to do and where.

Excel has the 'recent places' option -as has Word. I've got confused by your new reference to Firefox!
