RBS Charges question

Went into RBS the other day to be told that my student account was overdrawn (maxed out overdraft ). They then changed their story and said it looked as it it was overdrawn as a DD was due to come out in a few days, and that was what would bring the account overdrawn (therefore implying that it wasn't actually overdrawn at the time).

So I immediately put some cash in the account. Problem was the bank didn't have the facilities to put the cash directly into my account so would take a day or two to clear...they still told me it should go in in time to stop me being charged.

Next thing I know I get a letter saying I'm overdrawn and the charge is £33, but they then go on to say (without any explanation) that they're charging me £38?!

I'm going to try and go to the bank today (apparently they open on saturdays) to try and get this sorted, but any advice in case they start being difficult (having nasty flashbacks to Lloyds TSB who were rude as all hell to me in the past) would be much appreciated!.

Many thanks.

Simply explain what you were told here. I would not use the words "then they changed their story" and simply say that said I was overdrawn and then later told me a Direct Debit was due out so I then went and paid some money into x branch which said that it would credit the account in time so that I didn't get charges but I have been charged. Explain to them that you believe that you were told erroneous information or that their explanation left you in no doubt that you had covered the outgoing and you would not incur charges and you have. Ask them politely, as it was a bank error that they would refund £38.00

  • Thanks - went in today and got a different story - apparently I was charged as this was the *second* time the company (BT) had tried to withdraw the Direct Debit, not the first as I was informed when I first went it. Was also told I could increase my overdraft by £200 - been asking for the last 6 months and they kept saying no they couldn't increase it (including when I went in earlier this week), now suddenly they can? If they had before I wouldn't have gone overdrawn *sighs*.

Still, they suggested I write a letter in to the bank manager, so I guess that's what I'll have to do!

    Thanks again for the help.
