I have an Amex Platinum credit card, member since October 2002. I've spent about £7000 on my card in purchases since last October and cleared it last month and attempted to do a balance transfer. Just got a couple of letters through, exactly the same as the OP, apologising for not being able to carry out my balance transfers.

After shipping customer services off to India, this is a pisstake. This company used to be fantastic for customer service and it's gone right down the pan. I'll be waiting until October for my cashback to come through and then I'll be demanding a refund for the £25 overlimit fee that they charged me a couple of months ago (when I went over my limit for about 3 days!). Even if I have to sue for it, and then they subsequently close my account, I won't care once I've had my cashback...
