iPlayer on TV

What options do I have to view iPlayer streams on my non-HD TV?
I have a wireless broadband network, a TV with 2 scarts, an S-VHS/Hi8 and video / audio input RCA sockets. Both scarts are in use for a Humax PVR and a Panasonic DVD player/recorder.

Would an Xbox or a Sony playstation be the way to go, and if so, could I do it with an older (cheaper!) model than the current ones?

What would be the optimum way to connect for best picture quality? Thanks for any help.

PS3 now has iplayer as one of it's options on the XMB (main menu thingy). I've tried it and it works quite well. Any of them will do it once upgraded to the 3.0 firmware. It's possible to connect to the Scart using supplied cables (I think)

    Xbox doesn't have iplayer.

There are 3 non-gaming hardware options that I'm aware of and one software:

The Lynksys DMA-2200, the Netgear EVA 8000 (the BBC list these in the iPlayer FAQ) and the Zylex DMA-1100p are all apparently able to stream iPlayer and 4OD downloaded content to a TV via ethernet (all 3), wirelessly (the first 2) or via the built in 200mbps homeplug adapter (the Zylex).

DLNA software TVersity is also apparently able to stream downloaded iPlayer programmes if you have a DLNA capable TV and you can download it for free to try. I can't get it working on my PC yet however. You might be luckier.

As you can tell, I'm researching the same requirement, but I don't want to use a games console. I don't game and they are reported to be noisy. I'm interested to see if this thread picks up any other suggestions.

  • I have iPlayer via my xbox (old version, not the 360) using a script, but the xbox has to be chipped to install the media centre and the script does play up from time to time due to it not being stable (a reboot usually sorts it).

Picture quality is watchable but not as good as if broadcast live.

The wii can do it. I understand you need the "Internet Channel" which they have just made free again a few days ago.

Most Virgin Media set top boxes can do it if you're in a cable area.

Personally I just use an old PC behind the telly connected to S-VHS. That's the most flexible option because then you can play everything including all the other channels TV on demand options.
