Finding old landlords details

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post, i've come over from another board
Hi there,
Me and My OH are moving into a new house (hopefully)
And he couldn't remember his old landlords details for a house he rented a few years back, for his reference.
So Leaders said it was ok to just put his old letting agents name down and they will find out the info.
So was all ok until the reference agency called him and said "Fry & Kent are refusing to give out any details for the reference, can you call them yourself to get the details for us?"
Which was fair enough, due to data protection etc. (we thought)
So OH calls them and they told him they wont give him the details either, so he offered to go down the the shop with I.D to prove who he was.
They still said no. And all they can do is get him to write a letter and they will post it to the landlord (who lives miles away!) and then its upto her if she replys.
So we called the reference agency, they said "Well cant Fry&Kent send her the reference form we sent them via fax? Would be quicker."
Oh calls fry and kent and they said they could do that but they didn't get any fax from anyone. So we asked the reference agency to resend the fax.
But its not looking good. They seemed very reluctent to give any details out at all, even with proof of who he was.
So is there anyway i can find out the details myself? I read online that by law you can have access to your landlords address, but i dont know where i would find it
Thanks

you are legally only allowed your landlords name and address whilist you are a tenant - another way to show your new landlord that you are reliable would be to take in bank statements to show that you paid all your rent and maybe that you got all your deposit back - this will show you were a reliable tenant0

Pay £4 to LandRegistry & get his name & adress for the property??
Go round & ask the current tenants??
Cheers!
