Hi, I am new to the Forum and hope someone can advise me if BT can terminate my contract without written notice.
It is a long story but I will try to explain the main points.
a) My partner paid phone bill by cheque (£121),at our local post office, some months ago. He had receipt but Bt said they did not receive this payment.
b) Eventually my partner agreed to resubmit this payment on 14th August but he was rushed into hospital so couldn't make payment - I was away and unaware of this verbal arrangement.
c) On 18th August my phone line was dead so it cost me £6 on my mobile to contact BT. They said my line was terminated even if I paid the £121 by Debit Card then.
d) I explained that both my son & my partner were in hospital and I had no phone or Broadband. The bills, apart from this disputed £121, were up to date, including line rental & Broadband up to 31st August.
e) BT said they would reconnect under a new contract only, so I said I would have to think about this option because I was minded to seek an alternative supplier.
f) On 21st August my partner phoned BT and was told that the new contracts were being processed, with the phone to be connected on 28th August and Broadband on 1st September.
g) I received a bill dated 24th August including cancellation charges for the original contracts for £73.45. It was BT that terminated these contracts without written notice.
f) My line was not 'dead' as such because BT even tested the signal on 18th August when they tried to sell me BT Vision. I still have my original phone number.

I still cannot believe what BT did, and to charge me termination fees is adding insult to injury. Do I just pay up or can I dispute these added fees?
Any advice appreciated

  • I have had similar problems with BT. After my line was not functioning properly they said that they would have to set me up with another. They charged me for the rest of the years contract and then continued to take money for both accounts!! 3 years later the issues are still unresolved.
Be very careful, it might not be a good idea to get another line until your current problems are sorted, as BT 'customer service' agents don't know how to do anything but tell lies in my experience.
I have posted some contact details of senior management who could help you in a thread called BT issues contact email and numbers.
    Good luck

    Hey Leolady,

I have read your post and you have obviously had some poor service from BT. I have sent you a PM with further information if you would like to take a look.
